I have the 1.8 for a cheapie its a amazing lens, was thinking of upgrading to the 1.4 but on a photog board most said if they could do it again they would of just kept the 1.8 not enough of a difference to warrant the cost.

for hand holding in low light fast lens is better and gives less DOF when shooting wide open---this will allow more opportunities to accentuate important parts of the image and blur out distracting parts.

in general faster lenses are better optically, with better edge sharpness.

they are also more expensive.

if you have a good camera body with high megapixal i would suggest INVESTing in good glass, the camera bodies have a fast evolution, lens optics does not, and you can always use the good lenses on the newest camera bodies.

anything in the "L" series of canon pro lenses is pretty good.

check fredmiranda.com reviews for more info on specific lenses.
