What started off as a "post decent hosts thread" has turned into a "my datacenter cock is bigger than yours" thread.

Yes, you get what you pay for, and yes (before you take pains to point it out) my signature does advocate DreamHost - what's your problem with that? If you really are "tired of trying to compete with el-cheapo hosts", then what is your beef?

Small hosts left aside, your fucking billing department has been calling me for a month straight now about $600 I owe them. No matter HOW many times I tell them you refunded me because the server was setup wrong they are still calling me back.

Hasn't happened to me at any of the "small time hosts." I've never heard any of the "small time hosts" sellout any of their resellers just to try to gain business.

No hard feelings, I just don't have any tolerance for arrogance.

Funny how you post that flying the sig of another host.
Selling out resellers? Bah. I would respond differently had you posted as an individual :-)

If they are bugging you about 600.00 you owe, then you should talk to them.
Dont you think if you said to them "I was refunded because...."
they would find out from you who authorized the refund and etc?
And how was your server setup wrong eh?

If you were refunded, hit me up in ICQ and I will investigate that with you.
Being that I dont know who you are from your handle, I cant tell much from here. Regardless, you can always open a ticket at [email protected] or speak with our online people to take care of this.

Ill take care of you if its legit. If not, then I cant do much.

Peace out.

Ycaza - Nice! Glad to see you step into the thread.

This thread is like opening a can of worms, but what the heck, my intentions are good and all I care about is providing good customer service and networking.

In the end, sure, everyone can poke at me for starting this thread, but hell, any negative remarks simply help me teach my staff better things to do with situations. All companies have situations. We havent had any that would hurt us any more than any other hosting company.

So for your comments above everyone, appreciated even if I bitch back. :-)

no worries brother, i never thought the thread was meant for me, i just figured I would lend you a little extra legitimacy. A lot of non entity hosts postin here, no ip's, no AS, no real bandwidth, but most of the time the people who choose them get what they pay for and come back thinking they won't go that route again.

One of our ASN is 33066 , and i agree and disagree with alot in this thread. Owning and running your own DC is overrated, too many headaches, too expensive, too much to go wrong. Im much happier buying a few cages at Equinix and letting them deal with the chillers, generators, security, power conditioning, etc.. Maybe if you are a huge player in the business, it makes financial sense to have your own DC.

I agree with split and ycaza, there are alot of fly by night guys who have no idea what they are talking about. I remember some guys saying they just bought cisco 3750's and were going to do bgp on them.
Things like that make you go .

Real business people know that hosting costs $$$, your not going to run a paysite or equivalent on one of these cheap hosts. Thats why there is the Techie Media's, NatNets, Splits, Clickman's, etc.. out there when low pingtimes and uptime count more than price. Latency costs $$$ people, and so does downtime. And they usually cost alot more than you saved on that bargin hosts deal.

Sorry for the rant but i agree with Split, these el cheapo hosts do kill the business, all to make a quick buck.

www.fixedorbit.com - Just place your hosts name into there and you can see their upstream bandwidth providers, their ASN and how many peers their upstreams really have.

Personally, I prefer having my gear in a carrier neutral facility so I can get whatever upstreams I want.

For instance, I have 2 racks at 1 wilshire in the Meet me room in LA. All connecting into Tier1 ISP's that are out there ... something on the order of 10connections currently..... No I am not a host, just a guy that has mission critical apps that my customers use 24-7................

As far as hosting - To me it comes down to support since you are depending on the host for your connection as a middleman to the net.

Get your own racks, power and IP's. The IPs are free mostly and support your own boxes if you want to truly ball.

I'm thinking about setting up... What are the main issues people are having with BS webhosting services? Besides owners/resellers who can't get things right with their customer service?

Besides calling people out... what is the function of this post?

Spudstr - Congrats on your ARIN assignment! Clap! Clap! Hard to beat he beaurocracies. (spelled right? lol) To succeed is to win for real with ARIN.

Kre8t0r - Thread of the month, radical! Im happy now. I needed one of those in my GFY life-time. :-) I am happy some hosts posted their ASN's. Those who didnt want to respond to the "call-out" well... there is no reason they shouldnt post their ASN's if they have them. Hell, there was a time even I didnt have my own... maturity kicked in though. :-)

New key? Old farts have ASN's? lol

The purpose of this post R.Benoit is that web hosting companies should
really BE multi-homed if they claim to be and if they REALLY are multi-homed, then they should show that by publicly showing thier ASN.
I see alot of banner ads claming multi-homed however most are not "themselves" multi-homed and carrier neutral. Being carrier neutral is very important and provides mobility of ip space should one tier one go Enron on you.

Scenario....

Host A does not own his own IP's OR has IP's that are lent to him by a carrier, but are not routed with his own BGP. Should the provider he borrowed his ip's from drop off the face of the earth, EVERY SINGLE customer of his has to move to new ip's change DNS, reprogram systems dependant on IP's and etc. A very costly risk. Ask me, I have been through that before!!!

Now, on the contrary, host B owns his own IP's, Runs his own BGP sessions with multiple providers, has his own entries in RADb routing arbriter databases and generally does things the right way. Should one of his pipes
go Enron on him (die/bankrupt/otherwise dead) then he has NO downtime.
No one has to move DNS, renumber or otherwise have downtime.
In this scenario.... even if a car crashed into the meet me room in his colo or self owned datacenter... all he needs to do is pick up the servers, move them to another physical location without the crashed car of course, and turn the servers back on.. All that has to be done on Host B's part is to assure the ip netrange is announced on the internet at the new location...

Portability, thats the key to this thread. Amen.

If you are such a great host and are making such great money why are you wasting your time with a thread like this? You sound a little threatened to me...

Nah, not threatened.... its not about the "threat", its about the integrity.
In my heart, I believe this has educated some people who would not have known about this. Call it business insurance to go with a host that is
carrier neutral. I posted this after I had a long discussion with a customer
who was being constantly bombarded with "we can do better" offers that were nothing more than complete B.S. from the person selling these so called better services. Rather than beat around the bush, I chose to *show* the customer precisely the difference in our network topologies and, well
the proof is in the pudding. I wanted to share this because my customer said it was the most enlightining conversation he has had in recent times with any host. I felt at that point, it was important to address, regardless of the bs people would post here about it, me and otherwise. In the end, now you know, if you already did, well good for you, this post was for those who didnt. :-)

Much Love,

Me.

You need to chill man.
Just because you are a big player doesn't give you the right to call other hosts "shit." You have probably started out small and worked your way up to where you are today.

Yeah, in 199x, again, when I was Concentric/XO. For a colo site with about 100 boxes and a few ISDNs.. oh how I hated the Pipes. ASN2828. 6509 isn't as impressive as it used to be. It's a big underpowered, overvolted fridge. Might as well be a fucking VAX. Who cares? Stop trying to impress the idiots with shit virtually anyone who's at a colo has managed for them.

Disclaimer: No, I don't believe Tear2 handles their own routing, they "outsource" that. It's much cheaper than having staff on call. I know, I used to be one. Then again, I'm just a single host wonder right now, what the fuck do I care that you manage your own copy of IOS. Woop-de-doodle fuck. Stop with the 'ignorance is more' advertising.. Fuck, that's twice in two days.

Couldn't have said it any better

By the way, you ran concentric? Concentric was my isp back in the days! I also used to use the EFnet irc server quite frequently

Good times...
