Why don't more people use Skype?

It's for free, you can talk and it's easy to use. The 3 things that best describe me.

Free, talkative and easy.

I'm on Skype paulmarkham1 if you feel lonely.

Typing is a pain especially when it's with someone who insists on sending one word at a time. Or up to 4, I'm trying to read what he/she is saying and it's coming in all the time.

Skype is for the ones who can talk.

Talking is more of a pain, for me.

Once I open my mouth, all productivity stops. I can't concentrate on my work and I have to concentrate on what I'm doing with that person only.

Where as with instant messengers, I can talk to 8 people at once and still be getting my work done at the same time.

I use Skype for social calls to friends around the world, I only use ICQ for work.

I guess I would struggle to concentrate on anything else if I was on the phone (Skype) all day.

yep, much harder to multi-task while talking, especially talking to mulitple people. also icq logs conversations so if i need to go back and check stuff, have link codes sent, etc its all right there.

I have nightmares of 8 people trying to contact me at the same time on ICQ, all wanting to spend money and ICQ is fucking me.

I have nightmares of 8 people trying to contact me on icq, but not being able to because I refuse to use it because I'm too important to deal with the occasional disconnection....
or because I'm too busy on skype all the time to give them the proper attention.

I prefer icq for business because I have trouble understanding some of the accents people have. When they write it out I get what they are saying without heaving to say "uhmmmm I am sorry" alll the time.

I use skype to talk to friends.

Skype has instant messenging as well though - even conference messenging

And if you really want to show off you can do a skypecast with up to 100 people at the same time...

I abandoned ICQ a while ago and never looked back...

See my Sig if you want to sign up for SkypeIn (includes free voicemail and forwarding) or SkypeOut

I normally use Yahoo for 90% of my IM's. ICQ for business, and then AIM for those who have nothing except that (only log in when needed) and Skype. Skype is probably my 2nd favorite. Only because I am used to Yahoo.

The conference feature is nice.

One thing I do not like is it doesn't deliver my offlines until the next time the person logs on and you are on.

skype is popular overseas but not in usa - remember some webmasters dont want to see who they are talking too - maybe they dont want a company to see that they are talking to a 19 year old etc. but webmasters in general only wish to communicate through emails.

I have several clients on skype... but icq has been a foundation of the industry for a long long time.. unless more are willing to add skype to the mix ( I do in my emails ) it simply isnt going to get popular - plus not sure if it saves conversations (which is very important for me on icq)

I use it with a couple of people, and I use SkypeOut to call friends and family in Canada... but it's a pain in the ass. IM gives you so much more freedom, I can have my music on, I can go to the bathroom mid conversation, etc.

I like Skype better, too. I only have ICQ for this biz. I guess it's one of these standards that stay just because they're standard. I think you'll need some major advantage for a big switch. Looks like the talk-feature isn't enough to cut it.

Nah, they've been going strong and only will get better.

I'm not a US resident, so SkypeIn is awesome! Where else can I get a US/UK/Polish/Japanese/Australian/French/German/Swiss/Chinese/Brazilian phone # for less than $40 a year WITH voicemail AND the ability to forward that number to my cellphone in The Bahamas or access that number wherever internet access is available?

Bear in mind that calls to the US are $.40 a minute from The Bahamas and higher to anywhere else. With SkypeOUT, calls to phonelines are 100% free to the US and Canada and only $.03 a minute to Japan, the UK and other major countries.

The long distance savings, phone number, text chat, conference/skypecast, call forwarding and chat-to-SMS (cellphone) features makes Skype a better business communication choice, in my opinion.

But then again, my opinion may be jaded. Click on the SKYPE ad in my sig if ya don't believe me

why do people keep comparing skype to icq? is skype a chat program?

to me it is like comparing email to a phone, they are two totally different things

I HATE the phone, I hate phone conversations....no one can talk on the phone right and there is always one party that is uncomfortable, unless the two people have known each other for years

chatting is so much easier and less personal for those of us that don't really like the phone type shit

Well Skype has the messenging option too, so you have more choice in your mode of communication.

i don't think you can use skype in trillian though

with 2 icq's, 3 aol's and 1 msn, I can't even leave my trillian behind for some phone software that happens to have a chat feature

i'm in the same boat here..

Trillian has been randomly dropping outbound AIM messages on all 3 of my PCs/laptops for over a year, though.

Unfortunately there is no other viable multi-medium messengers that I know of.

I need it to handle AIM, ICQ, and Y!.. log everything, let me rename contacts and add notes to them, and have containers.

Any candidates? =(

Skype is great for small tele-conferences.. bit hard when you've got a bunch of people all in one office in a conf with several other people off site though because it's broadcasting to everyone and with a bunch of people on the same connection is gets a bit iffy.. I've found server based stuff like teamspeak works better for that.. but if it's only one or two people in the office talking to other people offsite is seems to work pretty well...
