I have a Fujitsu and I dearly love it. Everybody who sees it falls in love with the beautiful rich "vibrant" screen! I take it out on location with me when I shoot and it's held up very well. Definently worth considering .......

IBM still makes notebooks? Man, I havent heard anything about them for a long time. I used to have a Thinkpad, I liked it alot until it was stolen. Never bothered to replace it with another IBM, not sure why. Then I got this POS Dell, which I absoultely hate.

Nothing compares to the Thinkpads. Period.

I've used pretty much every brand, and the Thinkpads are the only one that can not fall to shit within 6 months of heavy use. I do also take my notebook with me everywhere, so it gets more use than most.

So.. add IBM/Lenovo to your list.

lol to the alienware vote.. all i gotta say is sucker.. keep thinking your power house machine is the best.. you will be bitching soon enough about it.

from a tech i heard toshiba is the best, never any problems with them.

dell has treated me fair enough, but my next machine will be a mac.

Most retail laptops are around the same in performance, I haven?t seen any difference in the mass majority of them. That said, there are some differences in some monitor construction / quality that I really enjoy in the higher-end Toshiba laptops. The lower-end Toshiba laptops may perform decent (I have both a semi-high end and a lower-end), but its monitor quality is pitiful (looks like first-gen LCD tech). Then of course the most important issue is battery life. Most of the lower-end models get extremely pitiful battery life, usually around 1.5 hours, but my higher-end Toshiba laptop also gets fairly pitiful battery life (around 2.5 hours), so not sure if that?s just one of Toshiba?s flaws or if I happened to get a shitty battery with it.

No. I said best PC notebook. I'd carry around my desktop on my back before I'd buy an apple. I wouldnt buy or use an Apple if my life depended on it. I am trying to decide on what I want for a new notebook, thus my poll was constructed based on things I'd actually consider buying. I wasnt trying to be holistic or inclusive, or for that matter, non-biased.

Sorry that you were offended.

Macbook Pro 17, dual core, 2 gig ram... absolutely rocks. First viable portable capture/edit encode laptop I have ever seen, actually is faster in every way than my dual athon desktop.

Apple make by far the best quality hardware. In my experience. And it just so happens that they make the best software too, bonus ;-)

I don't see why Apple was excluded from your list either? they can run windows just like any other brand.

Damn no real answer is falling out on this thread.

What about the right tool for the application... Most here are webmasters so it would be kwel if the box supported webpage development. Would you use your laptop for the Macromedia Studio 8 Suite? Add MS Office Pro, soft firewall, strong wireless ability, take the load of good antivirus software (Laspersky) plus the host of all the other typical webmaster tools and still run at a reasonable speed.

Better add a large HD (160GB?). Any available that spin faaster than the typical laptop models I see (5400 rpm)?

Oh, DVD RW too.

I've had good experience with two Toshiba models. my Sony Vaio lasted forEVER and got beat to within an inch of its life but kept ticking, but that was an older 1998 model and I haven't tried the brand since then.

Everything I read about laptops in the Consumer Reports magazine leans toward IBM(aka Lenovo) and Toshiba as being the most reliable, highest quality laptops with good customer support.

(and yes....Apple is usually in the top three if not #1 in the CR lists, but he clearly mentioned in his first post that he does not want an Apple.)

How did you miss out IBM? I bought a cheap IBM X20 on eBay for next to nothing and it's one of the finest, slickest, most-lightweight laptops i've ever owned!

I have a 12 inch averatec... but I only bought it because it was small and cute. Is that wrong? They didn't have the 10 inch at the store or I might have gotten that one. I like to take it everywhere so I like for it to be small and light. I could practically fit this thing in my purse.

Well, I did kinda fuck up the poll and leave a couple of key manufactures out... I didnt know IBM still made laptops because I hadnt heard anything about them forever and a day... didnt know Toshiba or Fujitsu did either... and prolly alot of the "other" votes are Mac people cheering for Apple...
