Don't you think a 16yo needs the morning after pill more than a 22 yo?

"Zive, the 45-year-old owner of an independent drugstore in the New York City borough, said he will ask for identification to make sure buyers are at least 18, the minimum set by the Food and Drug Administration for women wishing to buy the white tablets without a doctor's order.

Druggists throughout the U.S. now must decide whether to go along with the less-restricted sales of the drug, the center of a debate between advocates of easier-to-obtain birth control and people who say it promotes teenage promiscuity. The FDA ruling means retailers selling the pills will have to police the sales."

The girls who really need this are going to be left out of the loop. Good job FDA!

Another fine example of conservative idiocy. For some reason, they seem to believe that not offering protection to teens will somehow stop them from having sex and will thus lower teen pregnancy and std rates

Or.. they believe that giving easy access to it will send the message that it's ok to have sex... ..

Kinda hard to say which is the best direction to go.. .

Its a catch22....

Yeah, pregnant 16 year olds are a bad thing.

But 16 year olds are also stupid enough to think they wont need a condom because of these pills.

Then that 16 year old slut spreads her aids/herpes throughout their highschool.

So you end up with 50 kids with aids or herpers instead of 1 pregnant girl.

Look up teen pregnancy rates and std rates among teens for both the USA and The Netherlands, as well as their respective attitudes towards teen sex, sex ed and safe sex, and it isn't a tough question at all

Nonsense. Good sex ed and giving out free condoms would fix that problem.

Why isnt it ok to have safe sex? Why is sex such an evil thing? No matter what, young teenagers will have sex. Sex isnt the problem, misinformation is, always has been for any topic, and always will be.

bingo. i think sex-ed should be 9th-12th grade, every year, as a mandatory class. i think in my health class, we had 2 classes on sex ed. thats it. and no condoms were handed out.

i think alot of it is that teens arent prepared (with protection) and/or feel embarassed to go buy condoms (or maybe not a dime to their name to go buy one for a buck.) Think about it: most female teens would be scared/embarressed to buy condoms and probably even think that a guy would have one anyways so whats the point? And most males dont like the feeling of condoms and being young and stupid, wont care to buy some.

we need to put (more than one) condom in the hands of both females AND males, every year. Let's face it, kids in 7th & 8th grade are already having sex. Let's get over that initial shock and start helping them not to get prego and spreading std's all over the place, and possibly to their unborn kid(s).

ya its sad, isnt it?? now, this was back in hmm....i'd say 1996'ish (give or take a year) that i took that 2 classes in high school. no condoms. just basically talked about std's. now, me being a safe & newly sexually active gal at that time ( i was 16), I ALWAYS carried condoms with me, every where. My ex fuck buddy, a few yrs ago made a comment one night when I was pulling out a condom before our 'session' and he said "you carry condoms like most people carry a lighter." that made me smile. thats what all teens need to do, too.

when did you go to school? maybe things changed since I was there...

I think he's Dutch, just like me. Sex ed has always been better here, but society as a whole is also more open about sex, so even without sex ed, most kids already know all about sex, protection, stds, etc.

The morning after pill is not birth control.
A woman of any age is capable of requiring a guy to use a rubber or use a sponge, female condom, or the pill, or ANYTHING.
In the cases of abuse, rape, or failed protection this drug is a blessing.
But man, if anything this this drug is the 'easy way out' i hate to see what happens to repeat users 10 years from now

Raising 2 daughters made it a very tough question...

It's not that I disagree with you.. On the face of it all you're definitely right..

But when you're looking at your teenage daughters and trying to figure out the best way to handle it, it's not easy admitting that they're gonna have sex and I need to make sure they do it right..

But then my oldest (15 at the time) came home from the health clinic one day with a sack full of condoms that they had given to her..

They're both 30-somethin' now, but there's a granddaughter to deal with... Pleeeeeeze make it stop!!

16 year olds will have just as hard a time getting the morning after pill as they have getting booze. Someone will buy it for them - probably their 18 year old boyfriends or their 40 year old mothers ;)

Exactly, it's completely backwards. Same thing that happens with condoms. Honestly I also compare this to the war on drugs and the war on terror. Totally backwards approaches to solving these problems.

Comparing the morning after pill to abortion is absolutely insane. If a person is already "pregnant" then the pill will not even work.

I know, it's not easy admitting your daughters will have sex. Hell, I have two little sisters, and the day they come home with boyfriends is the day I'll buy a gun.

But really, denying reality is not a good strategy for dealing with these issues. Teen girls have sex, and there is nothing you can do about that. Promoting abstinence simply does not work, so the only thing you can do is to make sure that they know all there is to know about safe sex, so that when they do decide to have sex, at least they don't get knocked up or infected with some std.

Alls the morning after pill is is a higher dosage of the birth control pill. My gyno had me take 4 pills in the morning and 4 pills in the evening from a BC pack when the condoms broke right after having my last child.. right before getting my tubes tied.

Kids are having sex..withholding education and safe sex prectices from them only creates the problems we have now.

Exactly, so a 16 year old could walk into planned parenthood, get a box of pills, take 4 in the morning, 4 in the evening and problem solved.

Then again, that same 16 year old can go into Planned Parenthood and start taking the pill and elimate the need for "Plan B".

There are already a thousand other things sending the message that it's ok to have sex. TV, Games, Computers, and their peers. Giving them easy access to contraceptives merely provides them with a source of protection for what they would already do with or without it.

Im older then you are sex education is in the first HS class normally, which makes you approx 12-13 here. I still remember it, like Libertine said (yes Im dutch) even then stuff bout STDs Aids etc mornin after pil condoms - we all had that, thats pretty common since yes Holland is pretty liberal bout that.

Most ppl here I know carry them.

its interesting.....

countries where there is good sex education, better access to contraceptives AND good access to planned parenthood type services (which is not the case in a lot of the US, esp rural areas) there are LOWER rates of Abortions

I'm pro-choice, pro morning afterpill, etc... but having an abortion for a woman can be both emotionally and physically painful.

I wish we could focus on more on educating people, keeping them safe and preventing unwanted pregnancies and children, rather than restricting abortion and the morning after pill.

I also find it funny many republicans will campaign against abortion rights, yet before it was legal in the US, rich republicans (and democrats) would send their daughters overseas to get an abortion if they got pregnant out of wedlock.

Hey, also why not put more money to adoption programs, keeping foster kids safer and letting gays adopt in more states?
