Lexington, Kentucky plane crash .....

Bluegrass Field has just two runways one 7,000 ft. the other 3,500 ft. The jet needs a minimum of 5,500 to take off. How the hell does this happen?

I watched on CNN pipeline when they took the first footage it was live and unedited and it clearly showed that the plane were in a direct line from the shorter runway. It was less than a mile from then end of the runway and had hit threes on the way, I doubt they made more than 100-200 feet into the air.

This was basically death by takeoff .... No way will the math allow a successful take-off. There are only TWO runway choices.

Main 7,000 ft

commuter 3,500

Surface: asphalt/concrete, in poor condition
CONC IS SEVERELY CRACKED

looking at the airport diagram, you can see how such a mistake would be possible as you must cross the threshold of of 26 on the way to 22. Regardles, the pilot took the wrong runway with the wrong heading indication and I can guarantee his nav equipment was going nuts as it did not match the flight plan as filed and he igonored that too.

yes, any airport with multiple runways have greatly varying lengths especially general aviation airports like lexington. Small planes have a small maximum crosswind component for landing and taking off so the shorter runway is preferred when the surface winds are favoring that runway.

Yes, most airports have different length runways and they direct the planes to the appropriate runways. Of course, the pilots have to follow the instructions...

Sure, private planes need only a fraction of what commercial airliners need. Also this prevents small planes from entering turblent air left behind from takeoff and landing of big jets.

I live within 5 miles of the airport. Driving by you can tell them apart!

wake turbulance is avoided by landing beyond the touchdown point or taking off prior to the larger aircraft. Landing or taking off on a crossing runway would put you directly in a large jets wake.

You will see how it happens... they have to cross 26 to get to 22... likely the pilot saw the end of the runway, though this was the place, and turned and took off...

humans...so falible.

Nice map/photo ... If you look close at the photo you can see the lines planes follow. None end on the short runway. They end at two different places on the main runway. The pilot veered off these lines.

However, the runways were just repaved and re painted, are the new lines as complete as the old ones?

Just a thought.

lexington airport isn't a connecting airport, you either are coming to lexington or leaving lexington
