No way. Saving 18 hours of HD on a single disk is amazing and will be used when available. I'd love to have a disk all of my favorite show or similar.

Gotta wait a few years before the discs become affordable.

Just like RAM and CPU.

..NOBODY's gonna need more than 8mb's of memory, ever.. (I bet some geek somewhere said that some time.)

I personally never thought I'd need 1000's of GB's of HD space. Not many years ago I thought 160gb HD was enormous.

things change.

LOL I remember when a 30GB drive was a monster and expensive as hell. Now, anything less than 100GB is dirt ass cheap

30GB? Dude, I paid $500 for my first 40 MEG hard drive. Hell, I paid $450 for my first 14" Delta color CRT.

There will always be some way to fill up the new space created. As long as they keep improving access times that is. Its pointless to have a 10 terrabyte drive if the search time is going to be huge.

as soon as the per gig price is lower than for hard discs they will be a real alternative for backups. i doubt this will happen any time soon though since 750GB drives are sold for less then $450 right now...

You'll have a hard time finding new hard drives smaller than 100GB nowadays..

Not for backups. A DVD backup set of all the stuff I have on my workstation would span approximately 35 dual layer discs... ie almost completely impractical

Even besides backups, HD or super HD movies etc will fill it up pretty fast.

People will always find ways to increase their "needs" with anything they have given the opportunity. If your yearly income doubles, a year later will you have twice as much money? no you will wonder how you ever managed on half the amount. If you buy a house twice as big as your old one, given time it will be filled up with crap and not half empty etc etc

I have to agree that this will be usefull to most one day. But right now the only reason why somebody will use theses are probably content shooters and video editors.
It will be too expensvie for the commons to buy it within the next couple years probably...

They say in a few years time they will reach 100Gb for flash drives. That will be cool.

Nice size DVD! Unless you have a bad burn!

I could so use that kind of mass storage.. I've filled my 300 gig twice this year, had to buy a second one for more storage.

Another reason why Blu-ray is superior to HD-DVDs. And yet one more reason to get a PS3 when they come out

It's happening already, just that they're too expensive to go mainstream. I think Samsung was the first one to come up with a prototype.
