whats up with all the hosting setup fees

really when i see a server with a setup fee then i am like no thank you. of course not when i am about to buy a server solution that needs special stuff. but i am talking about those didicated servers for 400 bucks and more. half of the hosting companies are asking 99 to 200 bucks setup fee and other have no setup. I think that setup fee is costing customers. Or am I totaly stupid.

I think he meant costing the hosting companies customers as they won't pay the set-up fees.

Some will drop them, some won't. Sometimes if you tell them you are an adult webmaster they will knock them off because they hope you will burn a lot of bw.

Maybe they do it as an obstacle to stop someone from signing up and spamming or running illegal shit. If you expect your server will shut down you probably don't want to pay an upfront fee and will move on to a different provider.

thats a bunch of crock. Personaly, I always look for services without setup fees. Its a big factor. Not because i want to do illegal things, but because i simply dont want to pay extra money?

Exactly ...

And it also says that the customer will be a long term customer ...

It is easy to remove the setup fees, and blend them in the monthly prices ... Then the customer pays for them over a much period of time, blended in the price ....

Here is an example of how it works ( not from my company):

setup Monthly
399.95 219.95
199.95 229.95
99.95 239.95
0.00 269.95

The higer the setup, the cheaper the monthly ...

On the otherhand, when we have "older boxes " to clear , then we do not charge setup fees to get them moving ...

Its just a hidden payment - the setup are done automatic normaly. so the setup fee are a ripoff - just some extra bigmac's for the "host'er"

You guys would be amazed how many people order a server only to cancel it within 24 hours because they "found a better deal". Well guess what? While they were out shopping, the hosting company was buying parts and building a server. That takes both capital and human resources. Its a waste of time and money that the hosting company doesn't want to lose.

Keep in mind, the price of a server can run into the thousands. Why would you expect the hosting company to accept the whole risk? Thats how people go out of business.

However, many companies are comfortable floating that setup fee. I only have one package that has a setup fee and depending on the server setup a custom order will also include a setup fee.

Right now at Phat Servers we're having a September special, first month of any packages 100% free service. I'm even waiving the setup fee for our one package that has it.

Companies that charge reasonable rates stay in business. Period. Would you guys like examples of hosting companies that left their clients high and dry because they were so busy trying to screw them over that they forgot how to stay in business?

We stopped a long time ago. I mean as a host you should be willing to go out of your way to help the customer get started.

Also keep in mind a $200 set up free is like $20 more a month, so it's a way to offer a lower priced server but still get more money. Kind of tricky, never licked that kind of business.

But yes there is a process to set up servers and even yes web hosting that takes time and money to set up. There is a risk, hopefully customers will appreciate that companies like www.dwhs.com take most of the initial risk on both parties behalf.

We actually mention this on the front page

I should mention though that set up fees are normal and not a scam in anyway for most hosting companies.

I can understand a setup fee when you need something special done. but in most cases it's not much work for the tech and it should be included in your monthly fee.

I've paid setup fees before but nothing huge.

how about the hardware cost? to keep the monthly low, some of the cost has to be made up with a one time fee... just because its called a SETUP fee, doesnt mean its spent on building a server physically.

A host has to pay for HARDWARE, BANDWIDTH, POWER, RACKSPACE, COOLING, SUPPORT TECHS, SWITCHES, Software licenses, ETC.

You think your $200/month is going to cover ALL that, and help the host make back his money on the hardware, AND THEN make a profit? OH WAIT, hosts are supposed to act as CHARITY'S.

You pay a setup fee to take a little off the hardware / implementation cost so that the monthly can be kept lower.

If you dont want a setup fee, im sure hosts would glady RAISE your monthly so that they can make the cost back in time.

Total idiot.

1) i was responding to this: "You guys would be amazed how many people order a server only to cancel it within 24 hours because they "found a better deal". Well guess what? While they were out shopping, the hosting company was buying parts and building a server."

2) I never paid a setup fee, and pay less than $200 a month. There are many companies that do not charge setup fees. I dont know what youre on about

Look at car rentals ....

Some have no deposit, some have...

The higer the deposit ( upfront rental ) , the lower the monthly .

In hosting, if you are going to keep your server for longuer than 6 months, the best $$$ option is with the setup fee .... After 6 months, you are back nose to nose with cost. The 7th month, you are ahead of the game and so on ....
