Thanks for the quick response.

My next question is why?

I want to understand why you would choose one over the others and what the pluses and minuses are of each.

Thanks so much for the comments and feedback in advance.

FRom that list I'd take the cannon, they are and have been in the lead of dslr's.

But you might also want to look at the new Sony A100 dslr, it's brand new, i just picked one up as a lesser expensive backup while my cannon gets sent off for service. (I've been using my cannon d30 since 2002 and it finally seems in need of something)

Anyways I am impressed with this Sony! It has a couple neat features that no other SLR has.

Built in Image Stabilization on the chip so no need for super expensive lenses to have image stabilization.

second is DRO, i tested this and it works super. No more dark areas in the shadows in bright sunlight. It really works well.

10.2 effective Megapixel CCD, produces images at 3872 x 2592
Super SteadyShot CCD-shift image stabilization system
Sony/Minolta Alpha mount, supports most KM lenses and all the new Sony ones; 1.5x focal length conversion ratio
Dynamic Range Optimizer is a hardware solution for improving D.R.
Two dust reduction systems: special coating on sensor repels dust, and CCD "shakes" the rest off when camera is turned on/off
2.5" LCD display with 230,000 pixels
Full manual controls (and then some), as you'd expect; ISO goes up to 1600
RAW, RAW + JPEG support
Unlimited JPEG continuous shooting at 3 fps; RAW cuts off after 6 shots (though I did better)
Hot shoe for external flash (though it's proprietary)
CompactFlash Type II slot; Memory Stick Duo adapter included
USB 2.0 High Speed support
Uses new NP-FM55H lithium-ion battery; 750 shots per charge
Ships in July for $899 body only or $999 with a Sony 18 - 70 mm lens

Pic taken from my first shoot with the A100. With optional (11-18mm Super Wide angle lens)

Thanks for this other suggestion.

Nice example too.

Do you prefer Canon glass over Nikon? I know I can get other peoples too but in general what do you like best?

I also have a new HVX P2 and am getting a redrock adapter for it so I will def need to choose one glass over the other.

Sorry I've never owned a Nikon or shot with one.

But I can tell you that a good lens makes all the difference in the world. It's more important than the camera body.

Thanks I appreciate the help.

Now another question is if the 5D is worth the price increase?

For you or me probably not. For a PRO sports photog probably yes.

The main difference I like about the 5d is its full 35mm-film size 12.8 MP CMOS sensor.

If you're after something a little smaller you could also look at the 400D (aka Digital Rebel XTi). It uses the same AF system as the 30D and has a self cleaning sensor. If you have large hands then add a battery grip to make it a bit more sturdy.

Rowan,

Thanks...

What are the main differences between the 30D and 400D?

all on that list are ok for web work.

really depends on your lens inventory now.

if you have no lenses i would start with canon bodies.

if you have nikon glass already the nikon d200 is very impressive and probably the best bang for the buck of the group you mention---technically it is very advanced and has superb build quality and color.

if nikon had full frame bodies it would remain competitive with canon.

and this is the main reason canon is taking the lead with pro photographers.

It's toss up, the Canon 30D and Nikon D80 are both amazing cameras. Although, if you had a little more money, I'd opt for a Canon 5D for a fullsize sensor

I have a 20D myself and i love it! I suggest the first lense no matter which camera you get, get a 50mm, you'll probably keep it on there 90% of the time.

'For web work'? Um, people shoot all kinds of things, like weddings even, with 20d/30d as well as the nikons.

If you're hoping to get a 1D MkII for $3k then I don't think you're going to find an "s" for anywhere near that price.

You also need to be aware that the 1 series are significantly more bulky and heavy than the 30D or 5D. Once you've used one the lighter models feel kind of tinny, but the extra weight can be a bit hard on your wrist or arm if you're shooting handheld for a while.

Don't forget that the 5D and 1 series do not have a built in flash so you will need to attach an external unit (more weight...)

i have a 5D.

the 24-105mm zoom is superb. image stabilization so you can hand hold without flash in low light with extremely clean high ISO files make it the perfect gonzo setup.
