:mad domain hijacked - HELP!

Hey Guys,

I'm sure somebody here has been thru this hell before. I just realized a few minutes some asshole hijacked one of my domains.

I paid 5 figures for this domain 6 months ago.. I have(HAD) it registered with dotster, and the new owner has it with godaddy.

I'm waiting for dotster to open in 3.5 hours so I can lose it on them and figure out what happened. Anyone else know what other steps I can take right now? I'm looking into Icann etc ..... can anyone steer me down the right path??

any help much appreciated!!!!!

Don't lose it on them right away. Being calm and rational they are more likely to help you. If that does not work. Then lose it on them. Good luck in getting your domain back.

I've emailed and called both the original and new registrar .. basically waiting for 3 hours and 5 hours for each of them to open up....

Then maybe I will have to contact law enforcement or my lawyer as well ? Not sure what they are going to say to me when I get ahold of them..

any suggestions still very helpful!

thanks guys

Law enforcement will not help you with someone taking over your domain name. You have to get to the bottom of it yourself, good luck, these situations rarely seem to remedy themselves.

Shoot him up the ass 'buckwheat' style then video him dying in agony for 15 minutes.

Then post the video on youtube and provide links on the webmaster forums. Sit back as domain hijackings drop off to almost nothing.

Hey guys,

It's a mainstream domain name. I'm scared to share it now because I don't know how this 'hacker' has done what he has so far. I don't know what I'm in for but maybe he will say its his domain, or he bought it from me etc? I want to keep this DL until its resolved, other people with malicious intent could obvoiusly complicate this pretty badly.

Thanks,

if you provide ownership documents to them, they should have your domain back in 3-5 months...

Nyana, that is a terrible situation, and I will try and outline to you the steps. Although the first inclination is to react as Lazonby suggested (completely understandable gut reaction), Madawgz is on the right course with it. Your steps should be the following:

1) Find your original email confirming the registration of the domain name.
2) Contact both registrars (you are on the right course with that)
3) You should see the domain name go into a disputed status. This means that no one can change ANYTHING on the domain name.
4) Ask both registrars if they bothered to verify that the "Request for domain name transfer" was actually sent to the administrative contact of record.
5) Ask both the releasing registrar and the accepting registrar if they have an FOA regarding this transfer.
(An FOA (Form Of Authorization) is a ICANN REQUIRED document that proves that a registrar gained positive authorization from the Administrator on record for the domain name).
6) If the above has not gotten you the answers and results that you need, then you will need to file a WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization) dispute, and it will be a court case.

Nayana, this might be a quick(ish) process or it might drag on a bit, but if there is anything that I can do to help, or if you need further advice, please don't hesitate to call me or email me!

Don't give up hope, and best of luck!!

If I were you, I'd talk to Chris and enlist his help. I'm sure that if you agreed to transfer all your domains to Moniker (who have NEVER lost a domain), that he'd be willing to help you get this one back.

What happened?

Did the 'hijacker' initiate a domain transfer which was accepted because you did not respond to the transfer request or was there not even a transfer request (email)?

I know locking the domain is important, but still is it so easy to have some just take the domain?

thanks to everyone in this thread offering support, very much appreciated help ! (chris thanks for all the details!)

It's the weekend, so dealing with the 2 registrars is a pain in the ass. I'm basically waiting until monday morning to continue resolving this. I didnt even put my head on the pillow thursday night .. I think I logged 14 hours on the phone that day

The domain was locked and they hacked the admin email even tho it was a strong password, then initiated it from there I guess. Time to privacy protect all my emails I guess I should have had this done before. My password routine is pretty flawless so I am really wondering what happened here. I never use unsecure networks, only strong passwords, never a duplicate password..... We are still looking into cross referencing IP's and other stuff.

I think I'll have to call this lawyer too. I'd like to sue the piss out of this person or get some criminal charges on him, when we find out who he is. Hopefully he's on this continent. Anyone got any good hook ups with law enforcement ? Or a good way to get behind domainsbyproxy info? Looks like I will need a subpeona but thats not quick process I don't think. Hopefully I can resolve this from the registrar level soon.

Thanks once again,
