To many factors. Lifestyle, what you plan on doing, health, and so on.

So my magical number is .01 more than it costs to get rid of my body.

1. Cars

2. House and lot (big enough to throw a big party in it)

3. $5 million will be enough for me to retire

Fuck, looks like I'll be working for the rest of my life!

And only live comfortably like 10 years ... especially in the U.S., with the rising cost of healthcare ... unfortunately.

I reckon about $100 million and I'd be HAPPY to retire. Any less and I'd have to be old before I thought about it.

I was going to respond to bunch of people, but it would be just as easy to group my responses in on post. It is as follows:

You are all fucking retarded. 5 million? Are you fucking stupid?

99.9% of people retire with way less and live fine. Sure, maybe you need more if you work for yourself, but seriously, what is an average pension these days? Add a little for benefits.

Honestly, if you couldn't retire today with 1 million dollars, you probably are the biggest moron when it comes to money. Make a modest return on that 1 million, and you will be making more per year than most people in the US.

You don't need to retire with ferraris, multiple houses, and all that fancy shit.

Hmmm it all depends on what your lifestyle is like... I was listening to a guy on the radio that retired at the age of 35. He had $450,000 in savings and on average brought in a 8% return on his money. So basically he was bringing in $36,000 a year in interest... He did have to pay taxes on that too but he really didn't have many expenses and his house was paid off. The reason he was on the radio show was to announce his new book on how to retire early hehe ;)

I don't think I will ever retire, I'm paid to do something I really enjoy

Correct sire.

What kills me on this board is that in questions like these, there are people who claim their 'comfortable' lifestyle includes Heff's mansion, Ferrari's, exotic trips, and all this other shit.

It's nice to have dreams, and maybe you are so high society you think you MUST have all of that shit. Most of which you do not have now, nor will ever have. But as a keyboard warrior, you have the best of everything.

Regardless,.. I would say that if you can't retire on 1-2 milllions making the right investments, you are a complete tool.

If you're house is paid off and you car is paid off then you can easily retire on a $1 million. Or over here £1 million (1.85 million dollars)

that should easily last you the rest of your life if you're sensible with it.

So much shit on the board it's fucking funny... very few on gfy (just like others not on gfy/ real life) you have your very top 1% that make serious $$, called "fuck you" cash, then you've got the next group that has a few assets and the rest (majority) don't have 2 dimes to rub together.

Wake the fuck up and be realistic! Start acquiring property, pay yourself weekly or mthly and pay off debt if you have

Im not going to argue this. Simply put, moderate investing would make the lifestyle very possible. Most people in the US retire with much less.

5 million would only be 150k/year on tax free fixed income, which probably wont be much by the time you retire... Assuming our dollar doesnt collapse and we are invaded and taken over by china
