just got an lcd monitor and my eyes hurt

so yeah, i finally got an lcd. people always say they are better for your eyes, ect. but so far my eyes hurt. i turned down the brightness and adjusted the color temp to 5400 so i'll see if that helps but even the small font bothers me. i've only ever used 17" 800x600 CRTs and now i have a 19" 1280x1024. not sure if im gonna have to go back to the crt or not. any suggestions?

Because it is brioght and hurting your eyes right this second does not make ity any better wor worse for you. You are probably just used to a dull hot colored crt. Give it some time and you will feel the difference. If not? Go back. Why ask GFY? Isn't that a personal decision? lol

Yes turning down the brightness is the 1st thing to do when you get an lcd, by default almost all lcd's are excessively bright. I guess it's to grab the attention of buyers when they're on display at the store.

adjust your contrast and brightness to a lower level. Make sure your refresh rate is set correctly on your videocard to match your monitor.

you can turn on the clear type fonts, that seemed to help my eyes a bit
right click on an empty spot on the desktop
properties
appearance tab
effects button
check "use the following methods....."
dropdown box select ClearType.

I have fucked up eyes and experienced the same as you did. I keep a CRT and LCD on my desk so I could get used to both. Maximum monitor size my eyes can handle is around 19", anything bigger and my eyes start to bleed (not literally but it gives me horrific headaches).

It's totally normal ! My eyes did really hurt the first few days, I was pretty shocked until a friend told me he had experienced the same. After 3 days it was perfectly fine. Just two things are important: Always use the maximum resolution, since most fonts will be blurry in any other resolution and turn down the brightness, the factory settings seem to be made for people who want to illuminate their houses with the LCD.

you are probably experiencing the difference between 800x600 versus 1280x1024

I find keeping the refresh rate as high as it'll go helps my eyes.

Yeah, you gotta check the refresh rate.

Start -- control panels -- display. sometimes the refresh rate is low -- at 60 mhz or something -- set it to the highest your monitor will allow -- like 80-90 mhz.

I had some eye discomfort when I switched to an LCD... as well as being BRIGHT everything seemed "smaller" - probably because its native res has a smaller dot pitch than I would use with a CRT. Unfortunately you usually can't just downsize the res of an LCD without the display looking completely shitty, since it has to figure out how to (for example) spread 2 output pixels over 3 LCD pixels.

Try lowering your resolution to 1024x768... or all the way to 800x600 again if you have to.
