Which CMS is best?...custom or?

I realize I need a CMS to upload and manage content. Any open source, custom or other CMS suggestions?

I have run a few great cms on my site. All have done the job. Nothing beats the custom one i have now though. Has made my job alot easier.

if you have not used a CMS before i would suggest just getting something like sitedepth. It's good.

Maybe when you out grow something like that, then consider a custom made CMS.

It all depends what you want it to do. Any CMS will do what you described above. When you start to get into scheduling options for the data and other things is what sets the programs apart. Here are a few others to check out:

http://joomla.org - joomla
http://awiz.com - awiz
http://toomuchmedia.com - carma
http://mansionproductions.com - mas
http://sitedepth.com - sitedepth

what's the easiest one?

i'm better at marketing and being artistic than with computer stuff.

Which CMS is the easiest to install and use, and how much should I pay someone to get set it up for a simple photo site?

We use custom, but any of them will do what you need.

No problem.

As far as easy goes, it's hard to say. It would all depend on your programming skills/etc. If you can't do it yourself you would need to have a programmer integrate it for you, and the amount of work would be in porportion to the abilities of the CMS. You can have a simple tour/members area or a very complex one. That is completely up to you and the capability of the CMS you choose.

i use sitedepth and have had a good experience with those guys, it did pretty much all we needed, i know some firends who needed some custom stuff and got it done at a fairly good price , seems cheaper than to go totally custom

Joomla is nice with a growing community. The only thing that gave me problems was editing their templates. (Not simple at all).

I'd recommend Sitedepth.

Great userface and super easy to customize to your liking. If you're lazy, you can set it up so that all your tour pages will reflect all your most recent updates. Just copy and paste your header and footer into the sitedepth database and tweak a few things and you're good to go.

I've used it for almost three years now and wouldn't look any place else.

I have a Beta that I am finishing up on that I posted in an earlier thread. This one is super fast and designed for webmasters who don't want to fuck around. It can handle any size images and has a kick ass thumbnailer that will also do sharpening.

This is a very simple demo (only 24 sets) so I don't get slammed with bandwidth when this link gets posted elsewhere.

The demo is not all glammed up. I am more concerned that webmasters see how the engine runs and not focus on the paint job.

When you're ready for something high end check out a live demo of the Elevated X cms - www.elevatedx.com

This is a highly customized system that will be total overkill if you just need to manage photos or a very simple site just FYI.

I'm also in the market for a CMS - pics are not as much on the foreground as they are for the thread starter. I need this for article/blog posting.
