Freesites submitters, what's your take on LLs new rules?

These are the two new rules:
1 - Pics must have a combined width & height of 1200 pixels. Good: 700 + 525 = 1225 Bad: 640 + 480 = 1120

2 - Pic Sites: 24 pics minimum with at least 12 pics/page Movie Sites: 120 seconds of movies with at least 10 seconds/movie.

So far i can't say i'm impressed with these new rules. My traffic hasn't increased nor did my conversion ratio since these new rules.

They're just trying to stay in the game. Comply and take it in stride... or switch to blogs or something maybe :D

Isnt it almost only GreenGuy that has those rules? Or have the other big ones "converted" to that too?

Well, their sites, their rules. Submitters are so desperate these days because of "pay to play", that they'll do anything if they can submit for free.

Most linklists follow whatever GreenGuy says.

It's been a couple of months since I submitted, so I haven't seen these rules. I don't like them, though. It means I have to change a lot of my templates.

I guess since Im a LL owner Ill try to explain - but since I only know of 2 or 3 LLs that require this I should probably defer to them - I dont think the intention was to make you any more sales or to increase your traffic - I believe that it mostly had to do with the fact that most surfers are using much higher resolution monitor settings to surf these days - so putting up a site at 800 looks like crap when the full size pics are 500 on the large side.
the 24 pics I assume is to try to get more surfers looking through the sites although I would think it would be easier to arrange templates with the 2 extra pics
The movie lengths isnt something new so not really a change

In the long run it also means that more submitters will get listed because a real good percentage of them were getting declined for sideways scroll at 800

Of course most submitters I get were doing more than this anyway - so its kinda moot for me - most were building for PK where 30 pics were required

120 seconds of movies with at least 10 seconds/movie sounds very resonable.

I submit mostly movie sites

I always thought the goal of of a LL was to increase conversion ratio and not so much to cave to freeloaders wants!

A free site has a much higher ratio of advertising to content, typically 3 ad spots per page, and two "lead in" pages before the gallery gets shown, so basically 6 sale chances before the gallery, and 3 on the galleries each, so 12 shots at selling. This compares favorably to a TGP gallery, which often has only a couple of links off and really only one shot to sell (the gallery itself).

As for the new rules, well, only a very few sites are actually doing that, and often free sites are built out of two TGP style galleries anyway, so you are looking at more than 24 pics to start with. As for size of images, well, 600 X 400 images look very small on a 1600x1200 monitor, and probably aren't the best sales tools overall. It sort of makes me think that someone increased their monitor resolution and realized how crappy the little pics looked... but that is just a guess.

120 seconds of video (6 clips of 20 or 12 clips of 10) has pretty much been the free site standard since the get go of video sites. Nothing new here.

I don't care since it's just a sign of the times and ya have to roll with it but a few tgps in the past have had file size restrictions that I thought legitimately stupid.

There was a 2 min wait to post this

I dont think we are talking the same thing here - apples and oranges - the goal of the LL is to build bookmarkers - return surfer trust sells better than just about anything else out there
The free site submitter to LL owner relationship is a two way street - beneficial for both parties - the free site submitter gets free traffic obviously - the LL owner tries to provide the best qualified and quality traffic in return for your content that you list with them. While there is obviously a certain percentage of free-loaders (thats why theyre called free sites) - the LLs stand a really good chance (as does a free site maker) of converting that freeloader into a sale if they target them correctly
Part of a free site makers job is to try to take that free-loader and get him so hot that he pulls out the CC - of course that art seems to have been lost along the way based on the sites I see every day - seems templates that are made with sales text that doesnt even make sense rules now - and probably translates to much lower ratios for submitters

(just a little rant here - I tend to think when I hear all this talk about how conversions suck and the freeloaders are going up in percentage - or the way its usually said - surfers are getting smarter - is a line of crap - people just dont know how to sell anymore and it shows on their sites)

Mmmh... Caving to Google and user satisfaction in my humble view. Like it was said, attempting to stay in the game.
