Chile's Gen Pinochet dies at 91

Chile's former military leader Augusto Pinochet has died, the Santiago hospital treating him after an earlier heart attack has announced.

The hospital said the condition of the 91-year-old general had suddenly worsened, AP news agency said.

Gen Pinochet was in power from 1973-90, during which time more than 3,000 people were killed or "disappeared".

He is accused of dozens of human rights violations but has never faced trial because of poor health.

"He died surrounded by his family," the hospital's Dr Juan Ignacio Vergara told reporters.

He said more details would be made available later, Reuters news agency reported.

Gen Pinochet suffered a heart attack a week ago. He underwent medical procedures and received the last rites from a Catholic priest.

But in the days afterwards his condition had been thought to be improving.

The BBC's Daniel Schweimler in Buenos Aires said about 150 Gen Pinochet supporters had been keeping a vigil outside his hospital for since he was taken ill.

"I believe they will be joined now by other supporters as news of his death spreads," our correspondent said.

"There has been no immediate reaction from his opponents as yet, but I'm sure they feel very cheated that they have not been able to bring him to court to face the various charges being made against him."

Earlier in November, Gen Pinochet was placed under house arrest over the abduction of two people in 1973.

The charges related to the Caravan of Death - a military operation to remove opponents of his rule.

Our correspondent said that despite his human rights record, many Chileans loved him and said he saved the country from Marxism.

But even many loyal supporters abandoned him after it became clear in 2004 that he had stolen about $27m in secret offshore bank accounts that were under investigation at the time of his death, our correspondent says.

He was a great man that did a lot for the Chilean economy. Sure he killed some people, but they were mainly commies so it wasn't a great loss.

I would have no problem with Pinochet in power, the only people that got in trouble were the leftist/socialists/communists. Seeing as I don't care about them and consider them thieves they got pretty much what they deserved.

More than you seeing as you have blindly accepted the common view that Pinochet was a evil without actually questioning the logic behind the argument. I do not understand how a person who believes in a free market and the right to protect ones property would have anything against Pinochet seeing as they are the freedoms that he protected, the people he killed were dirty commies who wanted to seize assets and nationalize everything. And seeing as he only killed a couple of thousand opponents I don't see what the fuss is about.

If it weren't for Pinochet the country would be as big of a shithole as its neighbors.

Don't assume in your total ingnorance that anything to do with a "free market" and the "right to protect property" has any connection with a military dicatator, mass murderer and torturer who was trained by the US and supported with weapons by both the UK and the US in yet another quest to spead "freedom and democracy" over the globe.

Ironically Chile had a stable democratic government - before Pinnochet intercepted after the US could not buy the electoral system.

Ironically, the same bullshit is still happening today. A month or so ago, the US was injecting funds into Nicaragua to buy their electoral system and the asshole ambassador muttering threats if the vote did not go the way the US wanted. That prob helped the achieve the exact opposite and the people voted the opposite of "US foreign policy". Three days after the election, the same ambassador had a smile on his face and shaking hands with the new President and desperate to claim his attempted bribes and threats were "just a joke". Of course they were - lying dumbass

So sad Thatcher is saddened - she dined with Pinnochet along with US govt officials (Kissinger of course was included) while he totured 30,000 people and murdered another 3000:

Quote:

Pinochet death 'saddens' Thatcher

Former Prime Minister Baroness Thatcher is "greatly saddened" by the death of Augusto Pinochet, said a spokesman.

Chile's former military leader, who has died aged 91 in hospital, backed the UK during the Falklands conflict.

Baroness Thatcher also pressed for his release after his arrest in London in 1998 over alleged human rights abuses.

Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett used the death to pay tribute to Chile's "remarkable progress" since Gen Pinochet left office.

Mrs Beckett said Chile had become "an open, stable and prosperous democracy" since 1990.

A spokesman for Baroness Thatcher said the former PM would not be issuing a formal statement but would be sending "deepest condolences" to Gen Pinochet's widow and family.

Briton Dr Sheila Cassidy, who was tortured under the Gen Pinochet regime in the 1970s, told the BBC the victims would be disappointed he never faced a trial.

"For people who were tortured and particularly for people who've lost someone, who's daughter or lover was killed, I think that never goes behind you, and I think there will be a lot of anger that he has escaped prosecution," she said.

UK-based human rights groups have also been reacting to Gen Pinochet's death.

More than 3,000 people were killed or "disappeared" during his leadership.

Amnesty International said Gen Pinochet's death was a "wake up call" to governments that "speedy justice for human rights crimes" was needed.

A spokeswoman said his death must "not be the end of story".

"Amnesty International urges the Chilean authorities to declare the amnesty law void and proceed with investigations and prosecutions of all those others involved in the thousands of cases of `disappearances', torture and execution during Pinochet's period of rule," she said.

"Families and survivors need to know what happened, need justice and need their day in court."

The Medical Foundation for the Care of Victims of Torture had presented more than 60 cases in support of Gen Pinochet's 1998 extradition case on behalf of victims of the regime who had sought refuge in the UK.

"The fact that Augusto Pinochet will now not face a court of law to answer for the murderous activities of his regime is regrettable," said the charity's Leanne MacMillan.

"The men and women still suffering both physically and psychologically from the torture they were forced to endure, and relatives of the many hundreds who were 'disappeared' by his security forces, deserved to see him finally brought to justice."

The London-based human rights lawyer Geoffrey Robertson said many people would be disappointed that Gen Pinochet had never faced a trial.

"His death does rob us of a proper trial and retribution for his victims," he said.

I'm sorry but how could you call a government stable if there is a coup, the coup itself arises from instability. Hyperinflation, seizure of property, shortages of commodities and neglect of the supreme court orders is not something that is present when a stable government is in power. Then again you might think stable means something else.

Torturing and murdering ppl has nothing to do with the market economy. You obviously do not realize what a dictatorship means.
The guy was chasing and killing ppl all over the world (the Condor operation), not speaking about that he stole 28 million $ at least. If he was such a good fellow, after he turned Allende down, why didn´t he organize free elections? Eh?

You obviously have no clue of the history of Chile or Pinnochet? Chile was a stable democracy - that was never in doubt.

Thanks to a particular foreign govt who armed, supported and trained "General Pinnochet" and his military officers, that democratically elected government was overturned and replaced by a reign of terror.

You think the CIA in Chile were collecting intelligence? (Tip - the CIA is not an intell org despite the name - it performs covert activity, insurgency, terrorism blah as needed and has no problem killing innocent people - including children, and has little concern if US people get in it's way.)

Who do you think trained thugs to torture doctors, teachers, members of the overturned government?

I'll enlighten - it's was called the "School of the America's" - the US destabilization unit for Latin America - which was based in Panama and chucked out in the early 80's and back to Fort Benning. The name was changed out of embarassment to the "Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation" - they love a long name - WINSEC for short.

WINSEC almost sounds respectable but for the track record of murder, rape, torture, human rights abuses and "disappearances", - a good clean fun-loving organization fit for any nation who claim the principles of freedom and democracy foremost.

This was the same clean all-American fun-loving org who supported your dear friend Pinnochet while he (and they) tortured folks and put bullets in the heads of others.

Do you think Pinnochet cared who he tortured or murdered? How about... eg a lady surgeon in Santiago who had no involvement in politics but was given vaginal electrical shocks consistantly for five days? Can you tell her how nice Augusto Pinnochet was? I'm sure she'll understand after your advice - she was there. You think Pinnochet only murdered and tortured people who were "evil" in your opinion?

Since the departure of Pinnochet, Chile is, once again, a democratic nation and with all Latin American countries, now aware of the terror and torture tactics sold by the pinnacle of the world's democracy - and unlikely to let that scenario happen again. However...... the US govt does have some very nasty habits and rarely seems to learn from history - time will tell.

What bit don't you understand?

BTW.. The silence from the US political community on the occasion of Pinnochet's death is deafening. We concerned the history may be mentioned?

PS Tho Chile is not the only country there is a "wanted list" - why do you think Henry Kissinger needs to be fussy about his travelling arrangements? He is an individual wanted in other nations for involvement in human rights abuses - and a dear friend of the recently departed Augusto. Scum have a tendency to swim together in the same swamp.

Brief quote from a 2003 interview with Pinnochet:

Quote:
"I never aspired to be a dictator because I considered that to be a dictator would end badly," Gen Pinochet, 87, said from his home in Santiago. "I always acted in a democratic way". He described himself as "an angel".
Strange perceptions people have about themselves - The evil old ass was prob trying to appear insane to stop Chilean prosecutors - else he was nuts.

It would be nice to see a push ahead on indictments and trials for all relevant military officers involved in torture during Pinnochet's reign in the hope of closure for many damaged people who suffered or lost families.

Sadly the era of the death sqaud has not gone - drills and bullets to the skull are daily occurances in Baghdad (even the bodies are dumped in regular places each day and nobody queries this.) A few times a week small groups of women in El Salvador are found execution style, - throats cut or plastic bags over their heads - their crime was they have the capability of breeding offspring. Colombia has it's killings by their military govt - also a place which has detention without trial. The irony is the latter two locations are funded and trained by WINSEC and actually recieve "commendations" for their "advance in democracy" by the current US Admin (to the astonishment of human rights orgs).

The good news is... every killing since the formation of the new ICC becomes eligible for trial in that court and means the death sqauds of the current Iraqi government ministers and the WINSEC trained and US supported thugs of Latin America have a fair chance of their day in court.

It's so damned sad that most of these victims who had very little while alive and lived modest lifestyles, - no offense to anyone, - should have their lives terminated by human scum.

May they all roast in hell

On second thought..I would love it if they were forced to serve tea...in Dennis Thatcher is there already so he can serve it to one of the black South African's that his wife turned her back on while his company made their profits in the country.
