The difference? Tiesto did a version of Adagio for Strings, and it's good.
Oakenfold did not.

(The goodness is probably mostly Samuel Barbers fault)

Apparently Tiësto is the biggest DJ there is and people are willing to pay whatever it takes to see hime play live. Personally, I wouldn't pay more than $12 to see him.

another thing that bugs me about it all, people actually think they are seeing him play live...when in fact he is 90% of the time playing cd's and records, and when he isn't doing that, he is hitting PLAY on his laptop to play a pre-recorded dj set that he lays samples over top of

Pay to see a DJ to "perform" is just rude to real musicians.

While I agree that it's a fraud of sorts. There is lots of work behind that pre-recorded collection.
He knows it'll work and so does those who hire him. Everyone wins, the audience will like it even if they pay way too much.

But then that's true for most of the other top DJs also, except you don't have to pay insanely much for those.
The hard part is becoming a celebrity DJ in the first place.

Taking someone elses work and remixing it seems to be giving the one doing the remixing way too much credit though...

It's all about the hype... I was at Farina... I was at Tiesta... what fucking ever...

A good shows a good show... I'll pay for some, I won't for most, bands and DJs included.

I prefer massive shows with great DJs and Bands... when those come around, I'll shell out.

i don't agree with that, I pay to see a dj so I can dance, but I won't pay over $30 to get into ANY club

for instance I am going to see a couple of DJ's perform all their music live on the spot, does that fall into your category?

I get pissed when I pay to see a dj and all he does is play records....these days there are far too many advances in the club/electronic music world for a dj to just put some records on a turntable and play them in beat

Jace, it still comes down to the same thing... DJ's play other people's music, very very few of them add anything truly original to the game, and those that do for the most part do it once in a studio and just click "play" on their laptops or run their made CDs so it looks good.

Now if they actually made their own music, added something to the mix, well... even then... you are right, over $30 to get into a club for anything is just not right.

to me, the idea behind being a dj, it take something someone else made and create new music from that

I never put a record on and just let it play, I always have at least 2 record playing at the same time, sometimes even 3 records....I like to remix on the spot

honestly though, 80% of the music you hear in clubs is specifically made just to be dj'ed.....majority of it never reaches an album, much less a label....

The Qbert video is a great example. He does that for, what, maybe 10 minutes? He sure isn;t going to run like that for hours at a time.

There are very few DJs that truly bring anything to the game. DJ Jazzy Jeff MADE Will Smith, and could do it live without issue. That was combining and mixing AND creating something new in one shot.

$150 for a ticket to listen to someone spin records and replay made clips from a laptop isn't exactly what you call value for money. Heck, on that basis, the lightshow guy has to be worth at least $300.

I don't think you're entirely wrong there.
The lightshow is atleast as important as the music.
