A bunch of times. The casino here in CT flies us out from a local pad to their rooftop -- it's bad ass!

id be terrified.. with a plane (yes, terrified for those too) with engine failure you can at least float and make a soft landing.

With helicopter engine failure there is NO backup and imagine the death.. spinning spinning spinning.. no way youre getting me in one of those things

lots of times.. fun stuff especially if it has glass in the front so you can look down at your feet and see land.. I have flown in military ones too but not as much fun as you cant see shit so its quite disconcerning when doing turns and such, not sure if your crashing or if they would even tell you..

Only in the army, was extremely stressful getting in and out, as it was on an exercise, and we had to "secure" the landing area. Then the fuckers flew us even further from the base and gave us 5 hours to walk back.

Many times in the Army. I've been to both Air Assault school and Jungle Warfare school, been on many airmobile exercises, was a door gunner for a few weeks in Somalia, and then was an Air Traffic Controller and did many tactical airfields by helicopter insertion.

I rode in this helicopter like this guy to shoot the offshore powerboat world championship in Key West. We took off from Naples and flew low over the everglades to get to the keys. The view was spectacular with lots and lots of gators and tree damage from hurricane Andrew.

For shooting the race, I strapped into a safety harness with a rope so I could move freely while the others wore seatbelts. I had a still camera in one hand and a video camera in the other so I couldn't hold on to anything and I had to be real careful I didn't slide off the bench seat and test the knot on my rope.

Flying low along side those race boats hanging out the helicopter that day has to be one of the coolist things I've ever done

no, helicopter (and gyrocopter) blades keep spinning when engine quits, and can safely land using autorotation.

as long as there is sufficient altitude to get autorotation going (300-500 ft depending on model) they are much safer than airplane.

the danger zone is only in very low altitude.

Pretty much every day for a year or more doing mineral exploration work in Australia.

Our pilot had just come off a contract in Papua New Guinea landing below the jungle canopy so our desert job was like a vacation for him.

Unbeatable for getting to places with no or crappy roads. We drove 6 1/2 hours one time averaging 15 mph because of rivers every 100 yards or so to get a particular site. A few days later the chopper arrived in camp so we flew back to the same site...it took about 4 minutes in the chopper

Yup. I did that. Wasn't long after 9/11 though (think it was about 6 months after it) and they wouldn't let you take anything up there - including cameras.... unless you bought it from their shop.

Yea.. it is fun

Done the usual city and Grand Canyon type tours, but the best flights were "unconventional".

Took a copter trip into a live volcano in the Caribbean area. The volcano had erupted and was still active and spewing dust and steam. We got into the crater, but only hovered there for a few moments - too dangerous. It had covered a village in lava, but all inhabitants had left - apart from five who refused to leave and were buried under the solidified lava.

The copter went around the external sides of the volcano - amazing stuff - the place was deserted and only a few cows and dogs wandering around. One home was totally untouched - apart from a massive rock the size of the roof, embedded where the roof was. (Awesome when ya think that rock - the size of a bus, was propelled into the air and landed about half a mile away on the roof). The garage door of the house was wide open and lowered to copter to see inside - a new Volvo car was sitting in the garage - totally untouched.

Also had a few copter flying lessons - in the EU and Caribbean/Latin America - it's one of these things where I'd love to get a license

Yes, courtesy of the US Navy. Flew in CH-46's a number of times, landing on ships in the Persian Gulf... and on a few LAMPS copter missions searching for Submarines
