I sort of had the day off today and so I made this light ring thing. I was bored enough to take pics of the whole damn thing and even write a tutorial so you could build one.

thanks for the kind words. My device is .xxx compatible.

Oh also, some of you mentioned that I patent it. You do realize much bigger and better ones of these things exist right? http://www.kinoflo.com/12VDC%20Systems/Kamio/Kamio.htm
The problem with these is they are kind big and bulky, but do provide a more even light.

Telling me to patent this is like me building a car from scratch with plaster and tinfoil and then you telling me to patent it.

I just showed you an alternative way to build something similar that actually does work in real porn conditions.

Have you considered using 1W or 3W luxeons? You can get them in yellow/amber which I guess would mean less fiddling with colour correction under tungsten.

I do not know the first thing about 1W or 3W luxeons. Are those LED's? I thought about just buying LED's but the flashlights already had their own power supply, and the light part had it's own metallic reflector and they were already soldered together. To me it seemed easier to just modify the flashlight by seperating the light from the power to make it more compact than to try and solder 27 individual LEDs.

Maybe one day, I'll get a few dozen LED's and build something with more light distribution. I guess I could just buy it, but I kinda like building things.

Would anyone be interested in something like that? Like maybe building one to a VX2000 and to a DVX100B. I could easily build a mold and crank out a few... if anyone was interested.

Shoot me some info. Camera make and model please.
Do you primarily shoot indoors or outdoors? (I already know the answer). Do you shoot with tungsten or daylight balanced lights? Do you know the kelvin range in which you shoot? How close do you generally get and how wide is your lens? YES ALL THAT SHIT IS A FACTOR!

The more you give me the better I can help you.

Yep, Luxeons are LEDs - do a google and you'll find them. You can get matching diffuser attachments which have a lens that is probably of a similar size to your torch modules. The only catch is that you'll need something a bit more sophisticated than a high wattage resistor if you want to look after them (and not waste half your power as heat) but you can buy premade constant current modules that will supply a Luxeon.

I finally have a lighting test with it. You can see it's not over powering so it doesn't even really take effect until the model is just about 2 feet away, and it's not bright enough to blow out the highlights when she's just less than an inch away.

I added a small diffusion gel to each light. I just taped it right on. Look close after she almost licks the lens you can see the light configuration in her eyes. Also, when she's walking down the hallway her ass is lit up well. That hallway has always been a problem for us because of how dark it is.

A well oiled up ass and a light makes for a nice shiny ass.

Funny you should ask.. I'm actually building one right now for a Sony VX2000 with a wide angle lens adapter. It's a new configuration actually.

This time I found a drain pipe cover. It's the kind that goes over a drain pipe with all the wholes in it for water to go thru. The one I found was a PERFECT press fit over the lens. I mean... TIGHT, and snug.

I cut off all the wholes, and am left with a ring like in the first tutorial. Then I downloaded a protractor off google image search.

I have 40 LED's and I figured 2 rows of 40 gives me 20 points around the lens in a cirlce of 2 LED's stacked on top of each other. 20 / 360 is 18. So every 18 degrees on the protractor I made a mark and then transferd that mark onto the ring. Now I have an exact spacing for the LED's.

That's as far as I am right now. I hope to be done soon so I can show you. This one will be better.

As far as your SONY. I think it will work. What I would do is buy a pipe fitting that's loose around your lens. Then I would buy small 6-32 threaded nylon screws and then after building the light ring, I'd drill 3 wholes around your light ring and then thread them with a 6-32 tap (also available from the hardware store) then I's use the screws to lock the ring around your lens.

I assume that grip stuff on your lens is the focus ring? So you cant really fuck with it too much, that's why I'd use nylon screws then you could use the light ring as your new focus ring (if you focus that way).. if you rely solely on auto focus then by a ring that's more snug.

You could probably get 3 LED flashlights on your like I dod.. but your lens is so small that it might be too big and bulky. I'd try to build it out of a single row of LED's all the way around.. like maye 36 LED's that way you can put them 10 degrees apart.... I guess that would mean you'd only need 35 LEDs.

Either way.. the light would ABSOLUTELY work for you... You just gotta think it thru a little more that's all.

I'd love to collaborate with you and help you build one if you really try to do it. Hit me up anytime, ICQ 114.683.191 email is redshoe at redshoe dot net.

I've worked with ring lights for video cameras. The kinoflo was great, but a wire tagged around everywhere I went. There is also a problem with the camera exposing for the bright area in front of the camera, but around the object is quite dark.
