SplitInfinity - all you could ever need. And here's why

I've been hosting and admining for just over 6 years now, but I came last August to the adult hosting biz because a certain set of circumstance - every host and their dog can offer the latest and greatest hardware, and x mbit/sec bandwidth, but what I specifically searching for was a good all-round webserver and dbase server, but an absolute must was *quality* bandwitdth and *quality* support.

So, I thought at least for the bandwidth, I'd check the adult scene - if anyone could deliver on reliable bandwidth it would be adult hosting providers. I chatted with them all from GFY, but I settled on SplitInfinity, and after having hosted over 6 years with 3 main 'mainstream' providers, I can say I have never found such quality support than I have with Split. Their bandwidth is top notch - I've had less than 30 mins downtime since last August - and that was some a defective NIC, replaced ASAP. I've been a right royal pain in the arse and contacted their support like what, twice weekly and they always are on AIM (a plus for me from Europe), and have responded within a couple of minutes and sben active on my problem not a few more seconds later.

Why am I writing this though? i'm happy with Split - I fly their name in my sig for nothing after all. Because, since hosting with them, my currect server outgrew it's needs - I contacted them wanting a more redundant disk array and more processing power.

Get this They gave me exactly what I asked for and at what cost? Gratis Yup, they put me on a hardware RAID1 array with 2*80GB SATAII disks, pumped up my processor to a Pentium D 3.0 processor for nothing!

Yup, I can hear you all now - it's because I'm already paying a tonne, so a few bumps will keep me sweet. Trust me - I have a custom server which not a single person from the hosting companies from GFY could touch on price, so no - it's because they look after their customers.

Split Infinity gave me a fantastic custom quote and beefed up my server for no charge 6 months later. And *fantastic* support to boot.

Now, I ask you - why the heck are you not with SplitInfinity?

They have a *fantastic* sale on at the moment - trust me, you won't regret them.

You're quite welcome! You make hosting a painless experience and throw in some sweet surprises to boot, so I thought it deserved a bit of a rant.

Keep up the great work guys

We couldn't be happier with Splitinfinity after some shocking horror stories with some of the other hosting companys. They have been great for us over the last couple of years....

Not that I know of, but I'm from Europe and the speeds are very very nice. My server is in San Diego, which IMO is the best global transit position - their routing to Europe is great (pings 150ms 11 hops), download speeds to my home are in the order of 5-800k/s. I used an online bandwidth checker to check global positions for bandwidth to my server and every one ('cept eastern europe), incl. Australia were really fast.

So, I thought at the beginning that an Eastern US host, would serve me better, but in fact the West coast, with Split's transit serves me just as well, yet serves the rest of the world better, and as I have 8% of traffic coming from Australia, that's pretty darn important.

I have too much hosted in the US. I'm looking at NL at the moment. But, yes, they are extremely fast from here.

Mexico scares me. I had this thing way back when with CE and the previous (previous, previous) owner of sex.com. It was hosted just over the border and it didn't turn out so well.

The difference is we own our data centers in Mexico, along with our own Mexican IPS. We have staff there 24/7 with security on the building and security outside the building. So if you want fast secure hosting in Mexico come see us.

have you checked out OVH? They're DCs are in Paris. They're strange though, in that they have one set of (high) prices on their English pages, and a really low set of prices on their French language pages. Their support is English and French, so if you just need to get around the french language to find the server, hit me up and I'll translate

I have a server with them already, and might be moving the rest of my stuff soon, but I have not had time to close the deal. But what I have with them so far, is great.

You cutting in on their valentines specials? Or is it all custom stuff? The custom build is great - I want X,Y,Z and they said we don't have Y, but give me 4 hours while I send someone out to get the hardware and it'll all be fixed. And not just shitty low-end budget hardware neither.

What I can't understand though is when these guys sleep - I have Chris, Joel, Jon, Neo and Ariel on my AIM list and yet nomatter what time it is (don't forget I'm 9hrs ahead of them), I hit them up on AIM/ICQ and they respond. It's like their T-Mobiles are on their bedside tables or something! Not that I'm complaining!

Thanks dude I really thank you for your kind words we really try to keep everyone happy. We have actually recently upgraded to the E62 phone from Nokia from Cingular. It is a sweet phone, although it is a bit odd shaped but we get much better reception on it, and the ssh client is much faster.

Of course, you are entitled to demand the option of your choice, and I'm pretty sure Split offer GB as a bandwidth option (Joel - can you confirm?)

But then again, maybe you don't fully understand what 95th percentile is? It really is a far better method (for the customer):

Quote:

Computing the 95th percentile from the accumulated 5-minute data transfer samples provides an effective means of evaluating the regular, sustained utilization of your connection. The 95th percentile calculation is a widely used mathematical algorithm--most large service providers (UUNet, Sprint, Cable & Wireless, etc.) use this method to calculate bills for larger circuits (e.g. Ethernet, T3).

Site Specific computes the 95th percentile based on the inbound and outbound data transfer measured at your connection point at 5 minute intervals over a one month period. The 95th percentile value is computed separately on your accumulated inbound and outbound data transfer sample sets, respectively. The higher of the two computed values becomes the 95th percentile value used on your monthly bill.

To compute the 95th percentile value on a data set, the following algorithm is used: sort the data set by value from higest to lowest, discard the highest 5% of the sorted samples, and the next highest sample becomes the 95th percentile value for the data set. For example, suppose that a month is 1 hour, 40 minutes in length. Over the course of this short month, we gathered the following data sets for the inbound and outbound traffic (all numbers in Mb/s):

inbound = [0.139 0.653 0.201 0.116 0.084 0.032 0.047 0.185 0.198 0.203 0.276 0.370 0.971 0.233 0.218 0.182 0.169 0.126 0.131 0.157]
outbound = [1.347 1.435 1.229 0.523 0.438 0.231 0.347 0.689 0.940 1.248 1.385 1.427 3.988 1.265 1.221 1.013 0.992 0.874 0.896 1.002]

After sorting, we obtain:

sorted_in = [0.971 0.653 0.370 0.276 0.233 0.218 0.203 0.201 0.198 0.185 0.182 0.169 0.157 0.139 0.131 0.126 0.116 0.084 0.047 0.032]
sorted_out = [3.988 1.435 1.427 1.385 1.347 1.265 1.248 1.229 1.221 1.013 1.002 0.992 0.940 0.896 0.874 0.689 0.523 0.438 0.347 0.231]

Each sample set contains 20 samples--5% of 20 is 1, so discarding the top 5% means we must discard the top sample from each data set. We are now left with:

remaining_in = [0.653 0.370 0.276 0.233 0.218 0.203 0.201 0.198 0.185 0.182 0.169 0.157 0.139 0.131 0.126 0.116 0.084 0.047 0.032]
remaining_out = [1.435 1.427 1.385 1.347 1.265 1.248 1.229 1.221 1.013 1.002 0.992 0.940 0.896 0.874 0.689 0.523 0.438 0.347 0.231]

The highest sample from each remaining data set is the 95th percentile value for the originating set. So, for each set, above, we obtain the following values:

95th_in = 0.653 Mb/s
95th_out = 1.435 Mb/s

The higher of the two computed 95th percentile values becomes the final 95th percentile value used for billing:

95th percentile = 1.435 Mb/s
ie - ALL inbound traffic is automatically discarded. GB bandwidth counts IN+OUT.

The fact that the top 5% of bandwidth usage is simply discarded, as is the inbound traffic, gives you a far better deal than simple GB IN+OUT monitoring.

Thus, if you have 1000GB IN+OUT, this DOES NOT equate to 3mbs on 95th percentile. Sure, it does mean 3mbs, but after having removed all inbound traffic and the top 5% of bandwidth usage.

I know it may be easier to follow GB bandwidth, but 95th percentile for a website with bursts etc, is by far the way to go.
