XM and Sirius may be about to merge!!

How terrible is this? There would be no competition in Satellite Radio.

"Satellite radio operators Sirius and XM are expected to announce their long-awaited merger today, according to a source familiar with the deal.

The two sides were locked in negotiations over the weekend trying to hammer out a final agreement with an eye toward going public with the merger today in Washington, D.C., where XM is based, this source said. "

I disagree... The competition would be analog radio and that shitty HD radio..

It would be an industry vs industry competion.. I think it would only make sattlite stronger.

As the market grows, im sure the market would dictate more entry into the market..

I really never saw XM and Sirus as one anothers competition.. Analog in my opinion was the main competion.

I see your point. I suppose it's similar to Satellite TV vs. Cable. Although satellite radio is a paid service with rarely any commercials.

DOJ will block it. Don't get your hopes up!! It took them about 2.5 seconds including potty breaks to block the DirecTV and Dish merger a few years ago, what makes you think it will be any different for satellite Radio vs satellite TV??

Very simple. Direct TV and Dish Network simply rebroadcast someone elses content. They in effect do the EXACT same thing.

Sirius and XM have to create their OWN content. They do not simply rebroadcast someone elses content.

I disagree. Neither Sirius nor XM create their own content. While they may have exclusive deals with people like The Howard Stern Show (which is owned by Stern, not Sirius) and add to that the shows that are simulcast on both satellite and over-the-air radio like ESPN Radio and CNN Radio, and sprinkle in the fact that neither of them own a record label and you will see that they truly do not own any content. This would actually play into the DOJ's hand even more....with no competition between the brands it could ultimately get too expensive for the consumer.

For example, right now the NFL Network is exclusively on Sirius because of the deal that was made between the two (I have no ideas as to the terms of the agreement). If there was no competition, then Sirius could say to the NFL, we are only going to pay you half of what we were paying you before because there is nowhere else for you to go...while at the same time, they could come to me (the consumer) and say to get NFL you will have to pay a premium. This is what the DOJ is trying to protect against in the monopoly game.

The deal faces substantial obstacles in Washington, including a Federal Communications Commission provision that specifically forbids the two companies to combine.

Analysts have noted that the FCC could change the rule, but in a statement late Monday FCC Chairman Kevin Martin said that the "hurdle" would be "high" to prove that the deal would be in the public interest.

"The companies would need to demonstrate that consumers would clearly be better off with both more
