how do I upgrade MySQL on a freebsd server?
please... someone posts the steps before I start breaking things... this shit is driving me nuts

mr pheer, do not forget to dump the database before doing anything... stop the server, install a new version from ports and import the database... start the server and you're finished... or ask a server's admin to upgrade it as suggested by ghood, less headaches this way

if you are going from 4 to 5. head into the ports, go to the mysql 4 directory, uninstall. then go to the mysql 5 directory, make install clean. and that should do it, the uninstall will even leave your db files alone, but that doesn't mean you should not back up all data. if you need more help, you can icq me. I've done it a few times.

make sure you update the ports tree before updating:
portsnap fetch && portsnap update a better way of upgrading, and upgrading all dependencies at teh same time is portupgrade -rR [portname] take a read of this thread for how to use FreeBSD ports and upgrade FreeBSD software FreeBSD is the dogs bollox imo

Was mysql originally installed with the ports or compiled manually?
