I've never understood people who decide they won't fly out of fear of a crash. With the 10's of thousands of serious motor vehicle accidents every day you are a million times more likely to die on the road than in a plane. The amount of plane crashes in the world as compared to the number of flights in, say, a year, is negligeable.

The fear is irrational.

I won't argue that the fear isn't irrational. Until you HAVE an irrational fear, you'll never understand.

I know the stats and everything associated with it. Bottom line is I'm not in control, and I don't like it.

If it's a true phobia the person has then that's different. My above post isn't directed at those people.

But many people simply choose to not fly, citing the reason that they don't think it's safe. It's those people I was addressing.

Besides, how the hell are you going to join the mile high club if you won't fly?

I'm not afraid to fly .. it's just too annoying to fly. I'd rather spend 2 days in a car with roy, seeing the US, than standing in line with my shoes in my hand.

Pretty soon, ya'll will be flying in lil paper gowns.

Okay, now THAT point is valid.

I haven't flown lately, but when I do I'm not looking forward to it, for the hassle aspect.

I'm not afraid to fly at all, but with all the hassle I don't like it. There was a time not too long ago when I was flying back and forth from Malta to Budapest every week or so, and it got old very fast. I love to drive, so if I have the choice, I'll drive.

And you'll remember that statement when the plane you are flying in crashes and burns and will seem reasonable I'm sure.

Statistically its true but is of no comfort and makes me no more willing to fly than drive.

How about this....

I remember reading a stat somewhere that said that over the past 5 years you were more likely to die in a plane crash standing on the ground than you were if you were in the plane. The rational was that there were a number of incidents where aircraft had hit homes, or had debris fall from them in mid air, and there were even a few where a plane skidded off the runway and hit cars on the road all resulting in death. That was coupled with the very few actual crashes that resulted in death over recent years.

I know it sounds hard to believe but it was believable at the time.

When i was student i have got around six free fly tickets (to anywhere i want to go) a year from my mom, who was working at airlines.
At that time i didnt have any problem with flying, but now when i have to pay for it, i am really scared to fly...maybe i am getting old, richer and afraid more about loosing my life.
I have to drink some hard alcohol before flying and the its ok, because i continue with drinking together with friends flying with me too. So nowadays i see some fly as one big party

I agree. Not being in control is the worst part. That and the fact that 50, 100, 300 people lose their lives in an instant whether pilot error or mechanical failure is not something I like to think about.

There is nowhere I need to go that badly that I need to fly.

on my first flights i didn't feel very comfortable - but now i don't care at all. i even enjoy when it gets bumpy and all the people get white in their faces. there are just 2 possibilities: you arrive or you die. chances that you arrive are like 99,999999999999999999% - way better than in a car.
and i always remember the flight scene from Fight Club about the safety vests and the oxygen, makes me always chuckle at the safety instructions

That's exactly how I feel

Last time I was on a plane was June last year, it's just over a 1 hour flight from Belfast to Amsterdam and it was the longest hour of my life. Every single second that the plane was in the air was an awful experience for me, I broke out in a cold sweat and the anxiety I felt was immense. Never experienced anxiety like it before

I wish I didn't have the irrational fear, I know it's the safest form of travel but I just hate every second of it

so many people dying at once make it seem more tragic

plus no survivor stories stick out in ones mind more than some survivor stories naturally

plus most plane crashes = no survivors

plus no control and you dont even know how the pilots and the people on the ground are doing

could be slacking just like recently

did the maintenance people cut any corners

are they over worked and under paid

are they thinking about who else is banging their old lady

did they hire a terroist

how do they know

I hope this mofo don't crash

once your up there aint no turning back

god please forgive me for all my sins and selling porn

why is the plane shaking

I think im going to piss on myself

I'm not afraid of flying, it's quite nice really, fairly relaxing for me. The only thing I'm afraid of in life is a dolphin. Dolphins are just about the scariest thing imaginable, even more scary than a third term under Bush (hey, it could happen in a time of war!).

Now, if they ever get this craft manufactored, I'd fly. In the 8 years the prototype was flown, there were many mishaps. 2 wheels up landings, rotor fire, engine failure and never even a scratch on the crew.

Sadly, the day it hit the goal of Mu, the inventor said, one more pattern, right before it crashed into a mesquite field, and was totaled.

Untill then I suppose I'll just have to stick to an autogyro!

I do fly...But i'm very very scared... The day before leaving I already have a headache...I'm very grumpy as well...

Once I arrive, the headache goes away....

I do know that flying is more save than driving a car, walking on the street etc etc...I DO know that...But not sure what scares me...

Also my last trip to Seattle and Vegas sucked big time...So much uhmmm, shaking in the air...For hours and hours...Once I left the plane, I must have lost 5 liter of sweat

I had an experience in a 'puddle jumper' type of airplane flying from the Atlanta airport to Pensacola Florida that was something like out of a movie.
The plane was jerking around, some people got knocked into the aisle before the pilot could put on the fasten seatbelt signs and the overhead compartments flew open and stuff fell out of it... Honestly, I thought I was going to die

haven't been on a plane since and is a BIG reason why I have never gone to a show.

or only when truly needed.... ?
I do not really care for flying. Most of mine have been puddle jumpers I guess they call them. It takes longer to get through security then the flight is. LOL.

But, given the choice, I will always fly over an long ass drive (more than 2 hours). I like scenery and such, but depending on where I am going, I prefer just to get the traveling part over with, and down to bidness.

My aunt has never flown and her husband was a pilot for Delta so she could have always flown for free. She's 68 and never flown. I think even now she can get free standby, lol.

FYI, I Freakonomics, the writer pointed out that statistically you ARE more likely to die in a plane than in a car because of the number of people the plane holds and that there are fewer planes than cars.

Just something to think about ;)

He also said statistically a pool in your backyard is more dangerous to a child than having a gun in your home. Something to think about for all those who think guns are evil

You think the staticians that said flying was safer then driving didn't take in consideration the ammount of cars/planes ?

Or is there something I'm not getting.
