what is the max width an image should be in your main column....I am thinking 400px, but some people like 450px...and some even have as wide as 500px

Just tell me what your main column image widths are

I use 450 mostly, with images limited to 425 (to allow for a little padding on both sides). That combines well with columns and other layout issues side by side without making it too crowded.

Depends on how much you want to compress your images and the traffic (bandwidth)

A larger size on a heavily trafficked site adds up...

3 column upto 350px
2 column upto 450px

Just thinking outloud here - but it would be nice to be able to align images or atleast have default as centered...

I like it about 450 so I can do an image that is 420 wide

Depends on the theme. Usually between 450 and 500 px.
