You must be retarded or work for Microsoft. I hate that piece of shit. Finally had to turn off UAC so I didn't cuss and scream every 10 seconds. Give me XP with windows classic theme all the way.

100% correct. It's a piece of cack. Apart from anything else, it wipes 30% performance off most games.

It won't even install on my system.

Apparently my video card is too advanced at this point....

Perhaps the next edition?

Less secure than XP...

Quote:
Security company Kaspersky claimed that Vista's User Account Control (UAC), the system of user privileges that can be used to restrict users' administrative rights, will be so annoying that users will disable it.

Natalya Kaspersky, the company's chief executive, said that without UAC, Vista will be less secure than Windows XP SP2. "There's a question mark if Vista security has improved, or has really dropped down," she said to our sister site ZDNet UK at the CeBIT show in Hanover last week.

Kaspersky provides one of the scanning engines in ForeFront, Microsoft's business security product.

Arno Edelmann, business security product manager for Microsoft, said that Kaspersky's claims were surprising. "We have a thriving community of partners, and Kasperky is one of our best partners," Edelmann told ZDNet UK. "I find their statements a little strange because they have one of the best insights into Microsoft security products."

After being roundly criticised over its security strategy in the past, Microsoft has done a lot of work to improve its approach and has been touting Vista as its most secure operating system. But Kaspersky confirmed that her analysts had found five ways to bypass Vista's UAC, and that malware writers will find more security holes.

Kaspersky also added her voice to Symantec and McAfee complaints that PatchGuard, designed to protect the Vista kernel, is hindering security companies' work.

"PatchGuard doesn't allow legitimate security vendors to do what we used to do," said Kaspersky.

Symantec has claimed that PatchGuard is hurting security vendors more than it was hurting malware writers. Bruce McCorkendale, a chief engineer at Symantec, said: "There are types of security policies and next-generation security products that can only work through some of the mechanisms that PatchGuard prohibits."

Eugene Kaspersky, the company founder, said last Thursday that while vendors had to interact with Vista legitimately, hackers were under no such constraints.

"Cybercriminals seem not to care about Vista licensing," said Eugene Kaspersky. "They don't need to follow regulations or be certified by Microsoft -- antivirus vendors do."

need a min. of 1gb ram, 4gb seems to work well. Still sucks, and this is coming from a MCSE & MCSA but not an employee. Because of Vista I want a Mac, and I never thought I'd want a Mac.

This program I use called RSIguard won't work on it, even though I installed the version made for Vista. It keeps freezing my whole system. Anyone know why??

Also, it's very hard to copy and paste large files in Vista. Anyone notice this?

I usually adopt new OS versions only when it becomes more painful not to upgrade, which is going to be a LOOOONG time with this.

You have to install new drivers made for Vista. I had to do that with my printer. I didnt have sound at first either, I had to install new drivers for vista.

I hate it, it's totally fucked!!!!!!

Not exactly. Companies like Symantec are bitching mostly because Vista is good enough, secure enough that their software is now closer to a strong second line for defense rather than the first line of defense. Basically, Microsoft has done a good enough job that the 3 plus billion dollar anti-virus business might actually take a hit.

Oystein, there is a driver for your printer (you have to poke around HP site) but it may not print duplex properly. You may also have issues not so much with the printer but with the hardware you are using to do the wireless part, you need to look at that more closely. The issues with your wireless headset might fall into the same category as well.

As for software, I have to say that most companies have had months if not a year to work on making themselves Vista compatible. Many have chosen not to or didn't feel like they needed to make the investment, and now you are basically orphaned by those companies.

The biggest abuser in the "dragging their feet" battle is Apple, who are working diligently to NOT support Vista any time soon, attempting to hurt Microsoft. For this reason alone I wouldn't buy a Mac, because I can see Apple really trying to screw people over at this point.

It's very hard to copy and paste large files in Vista. It's really slow. In XP it was immediate. I cannot transfer over my mdb files that I burned from a cd to Vista and I don't know why!!

The disc is not corrupt because some other files transferred over fine, only the Chaneleon one which has my database, PA account info.

Someone pls help me! It keeps saying "Cannot read from file or disk"

Ok, if Vista is so secure then I'll be happy to use it once I can get Chameleon database working on it... All I need is that and RsiGuard to work and I'm fine, but RsiGuard completely freezes my system on Vista to the point where I can't click or do anything.

And I hate it that you have to click extra in Vista, if I want to go to Programs I have to click twice because it's hidden.

Plus it doesn't copy and paste large files easily...

bausch - Yes, and I have looked high and low for drivers to fit. Both on microsoft.com as well as on the providers of the soft/hardware sites. To no avail.

rawalex - same as I just told bausch, but that said, there are "solutions out there" but I have not made them work yet. And trust me, I have done similar things over the past 20 years so I SHOULD in theory know how to do this... lol

Yup, I am in the same boat (I still have boot disks for ms-dos and pc-dos somewhere around here). I truly think that the biggest problem at this point for most people is thinking that Vista is an "upgrade", which it really isn't. It is an entirely new operating system, and as such, there will be limitations and things missing while the slack, slow, and stupid third party companies get around to writing drivers and such. I know, example, that my personal laser printer (Brother) won't make the vista cut because it is a weird off model (Canada only) and isn't well supported even with XP at times. I can make it work (using a driver for a similar printer, but I won't get all the features), but I guess I can just go out and spend $100 for a new one.

Give it a couple of months, and most of the slackers (except Apple) will have caught up.

Why is this? Why are drivers for 'common' devices/cards not readily available?

and when did you install Vista?

Ok, for people who have Vista, are you able to copy large files from cd's to your pc? Or copy and paste large files in general?

This seems to be a recurring problem.

I am sure in a few months most companies will have fixes and new drivers, but what bugs me the most is not only have they had 1,5 years to prepare themselves (since vista became beta), but if I did this to my clients (MPA3, MAS, VIST, etc.) and had them wait for months before issuing a fix to a DEAD software or similar, well fuck, I would be out of business!

So shame on the companies that have yet to issue drivers for their products for VISTA and shame on Microsoft for not being more on the ball on this.
