Would you be stunned if a doc told you you had cancer?

I'd be like: "Dude, where's the morphine?"

What about you?

The chances are, living in modern society with all its chemicals and pollution, you are more likely than not to die painfully from cancer.

Well, that depends on your lifestyle.

I'm a heavy smoker (not proud of it) I like my heinekens and love red meat. So when I'm about 50 yo I won't be stunned if they tell me I have cancer, but i would be realy UNhappy.

Hmm makes sense..

Coughing up blood and half a lung that makes one seek out a doctor....pretty much why would one be surprised? Same thing if you cannot take a shit, and when you do, it is tarry, stinky and blood gushes along with the excrement...not too surprising.

Smoked for 15 years, wouldn't be too surprised.

I think your "more likely than not" is a little off though.

Isn't it like 20-25% of the population that at one point in their lives have cancer of some sort? I remember reading that somewhere, but not sure where..so it can totally off the mark.

The risk is a lot higher among people from lower socio-economic classes, who also tend to practise a more devastating lifestyle, such as being obese, smoking. Virtually all of the 'big killers' are significantly more prevalent in 'poorer' people - that is, in western society.

My Mother died on Mothers day last year from Cancer. She was 51yrs old. I wouldn't wish that on my worse enemy. When she passed she looked 100yrs+. It was horrible.

There is either something on the other side of death or there is nothing.

Either way, the only way to know is to die.

nope
happened to me last year
went to the doc for chest pains and breathing problems and after xrays and shit he tells me he is sure I have lung cancer. So I ask him whats the next step, MRI was it, and the test showed no cancer but it did show that I do have COPD (emphysema), so then I was a bit stunned and decided to get me a new doctor.
now I am on 3 different puffers and can climb to my third floor apartment with no difficulties. Quit smoking etc.
Hopefully I won't need an oxygen tank for 10 or 15 yrs.
