When I got home 3 of 4 ferrets were missing. Right now 1 still remains at large, hopefully in good health. Gotta watch out who you pick to watch over your pets while away.

Ha... Sarah I had to chuckle at that one cuz boy is that a true statement.

So here's what happened. When I moved out, basically every house available did not allow dogs. I have been getting away with having him anyways this whole time cuz I love that dog more than anything and I was just dragging ass with getting a new familliy for him and starting the screening process.

I've had time to prepare my kids for it, etc etc for weeks, months actually. Well I decided to have my boyfriend hook up with a girl I know that does fostering for an organization and let them do the screening process since that's what they are trained to do and I figure they'd be able to do it better than me cuz I can hardly keep it together when even discussing the whole topic.

Well, at 6 am in the morning I'm finishing up my hair and makeup to go to the airport when my boyfriends dad arrived. He was going to stay with his boy and see him off to school like an hour after we needed to leave.

Pepper had encountered him like 3 times and never EVER had he done anything like this. He's a bit of a nervous dog but very loving. Something about his dad though has always seemed to agitate him.

Anyway I hear him sit on the couch and he's talking to him and suddenly I could hear Pepper totally attack him. My boyfriend calmly grabbed him and shut him in my daughters room (she wasn't home). I guess he was totally fine while he was being petted but suddenly jumped up and tried to bite him in the face pretty viciously. He luckily was not injured nor mad. Just shocked and shook up. It was really close call.

I had like 5 minutes to get out the door. I went in and soothed the dog. He was clearly frightened and if I didn't know any better, I think he was truely sorry. But I had to shut off all emotion and say goodbye to him. I took one last look and hugged him and kissed him and went out the door.

So now I'm on my way to the car with my bf having horriflying visions of something like this happening to someone elses grandpa... or a child.... and what might happen to not only someone else but the dog himself. Someone might get really angry and kick him, break his ribs, hurt him, or lock him in a garage forever and resent him or dump him off...

So I turned my bf to me and calmly said... I want you to call this vet in the town next to us, and tell him what happened, and have him put to sleep. I don't want a single word about it while I'm in Phoenix. I don't want to hear anything whatsoever. I will try to put it out of my mind as much as I can till I get back.

So anyway I walked in the door night before last with the eerie silence of no dog barking from the noise. No food bowl, no dog toys, and no excitement and chaos of my great friend that is always so happy to see me...

So that's pretty much it...

RRRed, I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. I wasn't there when my Sadie died and thank God, because I would have lost it. Its amazing how much these dogs fill holes in your soul. My heart goes out to you and your daughter. Your pain will soon be replaced by the great memories your crazy canine left you.

RRRed, This is such sad news....and I can relate with what you are going through.
Just remember that you have tons of fond memories to cherish of your years together and those memories, you can hold close to your heart.
Our Snauzer drowned on April fools day 5 years ago....April 1st has never been the same for me since.
I am still not over it and when I think of him each year I still tear up, but they are tears of fond memories.
Hang in there, take care of yourself.......and remember crying is good for healing

I'm really sorry for your loss. It truly is like losing a child or family member. I'm not sure what I would do if something happened to my cat. I know we all go someday, but I would be devastated to lose him. I've had to put one pet down and that was one of the worst days of my life. We had to put her down the day after Christmas about 7 years ago, because she was old and just had a lot of health problems. She is in my heart forever, just as your dog will be in yours to hold onto tightly. My heart goes out to you. Hang in there!

RRRED, sending you big hugs People who have near death experiences almost always say they saw their pet(s) on the other side

I've got a pretty healthy 14 year old but an 11 year old I suspect I'm going to have to make a decision on sooner than later. It's NOT easy!! My Dad had to put down his constant companion, a 16 year old daschund this weekend. I swear, if we kids get half the send off she got, we'll be happy.

my sympathy, man.

Just be content with the life you were able to provide your dog with while he was around.

I'm sure you made his life very happy.
