Air Purifiers - do they really work?

I checked out an article about air purifiers on the Consumer Reports website and after extensive testing, they concluded that most air purifiers on the market were poorly made, over rated and didn't work very well. I was wondering if any of you guys have one and if so - can you really tell a difference in the air in your home? Has it helped with your allergies etc..etc.?

I have one that we bought for 700.00 The house smelled really clean, less dust and allergies were a bit better.

After seeing the Oreck XL infomercial so many times I finally broke down and bought it. I had to agree with the old guy, you need to move the air if you're going to clean it. I don't have much faith in the Sharper Image one that doesn't have a fan, it uses negatively charged plates to do it's thing.

Anyhow, I love it. As far as whether or not it works good or not, I guess it does. Everytime I clean it, it's nasty as hell.

If you wanted to get one, don't get it from the website, it's almost $500. You can get last years model - new in the box, with the warranty, which is the same thing essentially, for about half the price, on eBay.

I've heard bad things about most air purifiers.

We just picked up a vaccum cleaner that uses water to filter the dust as opposed to dry filters. It is amazing and doubles as an air cleaner (not purifier though). The crap it pulls out of the house's air is unbelieveable.

I don't think they work very well at all.

I have the ionic breeze from sharper image. Fan or not I have to clean it almost weekly with the smokers in my house and its often black instead of stainless steel.

It's good if you have pets or are a smoker in your house.

But you got to get the good ones. The ones they sell on the net are crap.

Asl Sleazy, his house could of caught on fire because of a bad purifier.
