Is Washington Dc considered it's own Nation?

I just heard about this from someone. I want to ask and find out for sure.

I know that they have no vote in Congress...but i didnt know they were considered their own country. I guess you learn things everyday....that wasnt covered in history class.

I thought it had its own classification as a District rather than a state - so it isnt really either.

Is it counted on the Stars and Stripes?

All 3 cities have an obelisk as well.

Washington=> military arm
London=> financial arm
Vatican+> spiritual arm

The "square mile" or "City Of London" has some weird status legally.

I live about a mile away from it and I really dont know how it all works. They have their own police force and stuff.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/City_of_london - the City of London is its own city within the greater city of London. It is where all the stock trading is done. The City Of London is partially governed by The City Of London Corporation - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/City_of_London_Corporation

It's not a star on the flag.

It's also not its own country. If it was, it wouldn't be sovereign to the United States.

It's a District, as delegated by the U.S. Constitution. It's not governed by any state law - only federal law. That was deemed necessary by our founding fathers because, primarily, it needed to be exempt from being affected by any state's laws, prejudices, or politics.

To quote part Article I, Section 8 of the U.S. Constitution:

"The Congress shall have the power... To exercise exclusive legislation in all cases whatsoever, over such District (not exceeding ten miles square) as may, by cession of particular states, and the acceptance of Congress, become the seat of the government of the United States, and to exercise like authority over all places purchased by the consent of the legislature of the state in which the same shall be, for the erection of forts, magazines, arsenals, dockyards, and other needful buildings"

Yep.

Washington D.C. District of Colombia.

It is not a state, because they did not want any one state to have the bragging rights that the capital was in their state, that they are better or what not.

Doesn't D.C. have their own Congress people, but not a Senator?
I thought the House of Reps, decided municipality issues in D.C.

I grew up there as well - but that was back in the days of the Crazy Horse etc

Yes the District has its own representatives in congress who cannot vote

No there is not a star on the flag for them - last one was the 50th state back when I was a boy growing up

Yes - they have tried to become a state many times - the statehood issue has been raging as long as I remember - of course when I was growing up they didnt have the representatives in congress - that was a recent addition

There is one non-voting representative in the House from DC.
