I believe you can set ZA to alert you only during certain hack attempts. Try that. ZA is the best.

I agree. ZA is best unless you want to get a hardware firewall. If you go out and get a simple Netgear or D-Link router it comes with a firewall in it. Or you can get the wireless setup for less than $300 which also gives you a firewall.

If you are sticking to Zone Alarm, make sure you upgrade to ZA pro. It's worth it.

If you are going to use a personal firewall, read this:
http://www.samspade.org/d/persfire.html

They tend to give out tons of falses, so wasting the time of abuse@ contacts should be avoided...

Turn off your internet connection when your not working on the computer.
Simple but effective at stopping hacks while your away.
My computer must be on 4-5 hours each day when I'm not infront of it.

Zone Alarm Pro is my choice for a software firewall.

You have to learn how to config ZoneAlarm..
And getting a cheap little router is not the answer hackers can still get through them....If you have a router and Zonealarm (I do) it's a lot safer... If these very big company's can't keep out a good hacker with $ 100,000.00 worth of Equp. do you really think you are with $200.00 or $300.00 worth of stuff... just hope they are not getting in your competer... if you mouse is moving around by it's self you have a virus or worm... forget which one... read about it.... so you will have to do some research... And get a good Virus checker... sound's like you have Mcafee...

yes it was one of those. I got norton and that fixed it. I just dont think norton alone will keep people out. I guess i will have to fuck around with ZA's config.

Well, actually, popular programs have bugs, so unless your (software) firewall updates with a new patch quite often, and you ALWAYS keep it up to date, they don't help much.

Remember, 99% of 'hackers' are just script kiddies. They just kick it to places like blacksun.box.sk and read a few tutorials, and learn how to exploit older versions of programs, such as windows/pc anywhere/firewalls, etc etc.

If you keep everything up to date, unless someone really knows their stuff, you are untouchable.

Here are your friends for windows:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/tre...ty/default.asp

For security updates specifically, and IE exploits.

And of course:
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

Critical updates cover the broader security problems too.

Keep up to date on this stuff. Running a firewall pretty much sets off a siren to script kiddies. "Look! i have stuff which important and cool on my computer, and I need to protect it!" Makes it fun for them to hack in.

Unplug the cable that leads to the modem.

Nobody will hack it remotely if you do this.

Unplug the cable that goes to the power on the wall.

Nobody can hack it from home this way.

I use Black Ice. I've tried Zone Alarm, Lockdown, and a few others and I think Black Ice is the best solution for me. You might like it too.

If you have an old Pentium I or II left somewhere, goto www.astaro.com . And install it on that machine, the only way to keep hackers out is to have a firewall. Windows software sucks bigtime as a firewall...

Just get astaro...
U get get a free home use licence, it really rocks. Its a linux based firewall using iptables. Or pay me like $150,- an hour ...

a router has cleared that problem up for me. Also there is Black Ice defender but I am not sure how effective it is.

IMHO, Windows XP's "Personal Firewall" is actually pretty decent. I've been using it lately and like it.

Along with a firewall to protect your LAN, there are programs that allow you to monitor which ports you have open and close those which are idle, making your system considerably more secure.

Another great firewall app for those running Microsoft operating systems is Tiny Firewall, from Tiny Software.

www.tinysoftware.com

Up through Version 2.0, the Personal Firewall is free.

Their latest version, which I believe is 3.0, now requires purchase. But you can download a fully functional thirty day trial.

It's a really solid personal firewall and I think better then all the rest that are out there.
