Id have my kid unlock the door.. She's 2 years 5 months.

Plenty smart enough to unlock the door, lol.

How old is your kid ?

By the way, I'd not smash a window with my kid in the car (maybe SUV).. Just too dangerous to the kid..

I havent had a car I couldnt get into yet, so wouldnt be an issue for me. I did all the unlocks at the body shop I ran that was at a dealership. Lot of dumb salesman who locked keys in cars. lol. But my wife actually did that a few months ago, but was my 2.5 year old, and she was asleep and she was parked in a shady area and wasnt that hot, so she waited 20 mins for me to get there with extra keys.

I'm assuming we're talking about a toddler here, not an older child that is able to open the doors.

My car has remote central locking so it's not actually possible to lock yourself out of the car, although there's a "lock all doors" button which I guess could lock the child in if I'd left my keys in the car and they pressed it... but (a) I wouldn't be leaving my keys in the car with a child and (b) I wouldn't be leaving a child alone in there in the first place

If your windows are aftermarket tinted then smashing them should be a lot safer, since the film will stop the glass flying everywhere.

I would use the spare key I always carry in my wallet

I also never leave a child alone in the car, so it wouldn't happen.

In Australia it's also illegal to leave a child unattended in a in any form of automobile, and it's also illegal to leave your keys in the ignition if no adult is in the vehicle.

I remember there being some controversy years ago when Crown Casino opened in Melbourne - addicted gamblers were leaving their children inside locked cars in the car park while they went to play the pokies.

I used to leave my daughter in the car when I went to pay for petrol but I thought about it one day, and realised that if anything ever happened to me that it may not be obvious that there's a kid stuck in my car. I have black paintwork, interior and tinting so it can be hard to see occupants without looking closely. Now, either she comes in with me, or I wait until I'm alone to fill up.

Excellent point, I never thought of it in that way.
For me, in this day and age I just couldn't conceive leaving a child unattended in public anywhere at anytime.

But leaving a child locked in a car while you go shopping, etc. is one thing, but for a casino.. that's just fucked. Candidate for having your kids taken away.

I always keep a spare set in a magnetic
holder stashed away under the car.
Short of Onstar or that, I agree that smashing
and replacing the window is a small price to pay.

My truck doesn't allow me to lock it with the keys in the ignition, so that's a start... like everyone else has said... depends on all the variables... age, temperature... How long CAA is willing to fuck the dog... If need be I'd sacrafice a window

That's messed up you would be suprised that stupid people would do. I don't care if I had a Mercedes or BMW or lambo, any expensive car. If that's my child, I would love to replace a window

A window is replaceable, a kid... isn't. Well, you can have another kid, yes, but not the same kid. :D

That being said, I would

1) not haved left my kid or keys in the car in the first place.

2) if a major dumb moment did occur and I DID do it, I would use my spare key I keep hidden somewhere on my car, or use the spare keyless entry gizmo thingy.

3) I would find the nearst brick and smack myself in the head repeatedly for being such an irresponsible tool, enough times so's I would remember to never do it again.

4) Get a vasectomy. Parents that stupid should not have the ability to further procreate.

when I have a car, I have a slim jim fashioned for my car locks, hidden somewhere under it.
that way I never have to worry about locking myself out or having some car thief find the keys where they are magnetically hidden.
yes, car thieves do look for those magnetically hidden keys, but most are not smart enough to look for a slim jim.

Most recent (20+ years) windows are tempered and when broken, won't create fragments with sharp edges and won't flake. It would be tough to hurt a kid if breaking a window that's the furthest from them.

I bought everyone in my family a Life Hammer a few years ago which slices your seatbelt and breaks the window of you're stuck in a car. I doubt they carry it out with them though ;)

Bottom line - break the freaking window if your other option is to leave the kid in there waiting for help.

This happened to my brother!

He let his daughter play with his keys after he put her in. Just as he closed the door she hit the lock button on his keys.

He told her to hit the unlock button, but she was too little.

CAA dropped everything and had a guy there in 10 mins.

Luckly it wasn't too hot out.

That reminds me of a car that was stolen a few years ago in Melbourne. Some chick left her BMW running while she dashed into a store to buy milk or ciggies or something. Her child was inside the car too. If that's not a candidate for the most stupid parental move ever, then....

(The kid was ok, the thieves freaked and left the car a couple of blocks away)

Ouch, I got that little story wrong. The location was Sydney, and the child did not survive.
