What factors contribute to the summer slow down?

Personally I haven't experienced much of a drop yet.

What do you think are some of the factors that cause it?

How much % of traffic do you think will dip this year?

I would think that many people take vacations or are otherwise outdoors because the weather is nice. Also college kids are not on college. Also little kids are out of school so less private time for dad to jack off to porn.

Perfectly correct. More people are going out on weekends, vacations etc. All the college kids are at home for the summer working & saving money for school for the upcoming year and the extra money they do have they are spending on booze. There's just to much going on in summer, everyones trying to stay outside, the loyal customers will still be coming to the sites and buying though.

BINGO!!! It is often a state of mind. You have a few bad days and you say, "Fucking summer slow down!" You end up thinking why work so hard, the traffic isn't going to convert as well because it is Summer. Your traffic drops. Sales drop and you have a built in excuse.

June has been my best month so far this year. July, August and September will be even better. Don't believe in the Summer slow down and you will likely see your sales stay on track.

1) Days are longer, people aren't in front of their computers as much.
2) Schools and colleges are out, families take vacations.
3) Big economic sectors, like retail, are in slow season, so unemployment is higher during the summer.
4) Gas prices are higher in the summer, which cuts into people's spending money.

Just my thoughts...

Steve is still one of the smartest persons in our industry. He hit it right on the nail.

Do webmaters slow down during the summer? Nope. They are busy getting ready for the rush in late August and September when things return back to normal.

We know they aren't turning to TV more. When I worked in TV we saw a
15% dip in prime time viewership.
20-25% dip in Daytime viewship
10% dip in post prime and Fresh programming (news/Sports)

That's why they have crappy shows & re-runs on in the summer.

How much of a dip in traffic (industry wide) do you plan for?

#1 and only factor to account for a drop off of YOUR sales during the summer is because affiliates tend to work less because: kids out of school and home all day, the affiliate goes on more vacations, the weather is nice so the affiliates spends more time outside, etc...

The affiliates works less during the summer and then wonder why their sales drop off some, then instead of blamming it on themselves for working less they blame it on the " summer slow down".

For Sponsors, same thing applies, their sales drop off because the majority of their affiliates work less and therefore make less signups. The sponsors blame it instead on the " summer slowdown " and the affiliates buy into this myth and take the attitude, well its the summer and it is slow so i am going to work less

There is NO big drop off of customers, just like during christmas, during tax season, when the kids go back to school, or the kids are out of school, during football season, when the economy is bad, gas prices are up, the weather is bad or good, it does not matter there is always shit going on out there and there is always lots of customers to sell to.

People looking for " slow downs " are people looking for excuses of why they are not making more money. A "slow down" could be found every day of the year for one reason or another.

You don't know how intelligent you are. You are one of the very few people to catch on to this. It is the webmaster working less that causes him to make less money.

While you see the truth there is actually people here that are saying " yes the summer sales are slow because kids are out of college and saving money for the next school year".

Yeah that's it.

EDIT: right on BusterPorn as well. I can't believe 2 people who get it.

I have been arguing there is no such thing as a summer slow down for years (no such thing as a slow down period ) but rarely see people see it my way. Most will fight till death telling you some crazy bull shit reason why their sales are less ...

If there was a wrong answer you hit the nail on the head for it.

Do webmasters slow down during the summer ? Nope. What the hell ? So all the webmasters living in the northern states don't go out just a little bit more and enjoy the warm weather after a cold winter. The dont spend a little more time during the summer in their pool or play in the yard, or go to the beach??? What about all of the ones with kids? Do you think kids in and out the house all day doesn't affect some webmasters and how much they can work.

Maybe you don't work less, but you are crazy if you think webmasters as a whole don't work less during the summer. Shit, I've heard a lot of people say they work less during the summer just for the shear fact that " the summer is crapy for sales so why work more when sales suck ".

And what is this working harder to gear up for the rush in August crap? Seriously, I never heard that one before. June and July I need to work triple time to get my sites ready for that big ole rush in August ??? Got to stay up late tonight to tweak my content so it will be good and ready for late august.

Some of you people for having been around for a long time I am shocked at some of these things you come up with.

I wonder how many people who don't have kids, don't take vacations and work the exact same amount of hours year round see a drop off during the summer. I can tell you as one of them, I never see a drop off of sales for any time of the year. The only time my sales drop off is when I work less.

Absolutely no difference in my sales between summer and winter, I make a little more every month and have since I started in adult. I have good weeks and bad weeks like everyone else but in the big scheme of things, I do not make less money during the summer and I do not do anything different.

If a sponsor goes to shit in the summer, I drop them like a hot potato and put my time into a better sponsor

not so much a mainstream thing as it is an offline thing. But mainstream is definetly affected by these factors, porn is not.

Online + Porn = good 365 days a year.

Too many people think that the offline retail trends are similar to online spending. Through porn in the mix and stuff like the economy, weather, time of the year do not cause porn sales to go up and down like the stock market.

Think of it like this, do you smoke less because the economy is bad or gas prices are high, 99% of people will smoke the same, just maybe spend less on going out to eat or buying shit from walmart they don't need. Maybe they wont buy that flat screen they wanted.

During the summer surfers might be online a little less, but do you think they jerk off less ? During the summer I only jerk off 1 time a month because of the good weather but during the winter i jerk off 10x a day. More like I was out at the beach looking at half naked women, I didn't get any, so when i got back home i got online to look at porn to jerk off.

Speaking for myself (rather than generalities) - I tend to work harder and shoot more during the summer than winter simply because we take advantage of the warm weather for outdoor location shoots. We stockpile through the summer months and relax our shooting schedule through the winter a little (not totally, but a fair bit).

Our work schedule isn't driven by sales trends - just availability of warmer temps.

As for what others do...I can't speak in generalities. I'm sure everyone has their own way of doing things.

That makes sense. Better weather you shoot more content.

This thread talkes about the summer slow down, pretaining to sales dropping off during the summer. I don't see how Rochard could have been trying to say that sales drop off during the summer because photographers are busy shooting more content then normal.

but I follow you, and agree with what you said, but don't think it is a valid cause to why there is a " summer slow down " in sales.
