Michael Moores documentary: "SICKO"

One of the best I've seen in my life. I think he just won a lot of friends in this movie amongst even moderate republicans.

Good job Moore!

Just watched a part of the movie where it talks about a new program for UK doctors... it rewards them (the UK doctors) for helping their patients. The more patients they help to stop smoking, the more patients they have helped to get their cholesterol lowered, the more patients they have that get their blood pressure lowered... the more patients they help... the more money/incentives the UK doctor will make. Essentially the exact opposite of what happens here in America…

It's a wonderful video. The best he's made, by far.

Yeah, you have to expect he showed the health care systems of other countries at their best, but he sure nailed the weaknesses and near-criminality of the US system.

Go to video.google and watch it.

Lol just commented in the other thread.

In short after nearly cutting half my thumb off 5 days ago, I really can't complain about the Australian healthcare system either. Don't even recall them asking my name while I bled all over the emergency room floor at 2am... just got me in and attended to and definitely no bills. The way the US healthcare system is portrayed is really scary.

Its great that he picked France, the nation half america seems to hate, as an example..

awesome movie. I liked the others too, but it was not such a huge subject which was so easy for everyone to understand...

Hope this helps all you americans!

my question is, what do we do next?

Are we strong enough as citizens to cause an uprising to fix this? Or is the system already too corrupt to fix?

The only thing that I can think to do immediately, is get everyone I know to watch this documentary. I've never liked anything about Michael Moore, but this subject hits very close to home.

We are too complacent, we get used to anything no matter how fucked up it is.
This system is fubar....

I love this country but i know its a meat grinder. If the dice rolls against you, your fucked. Funny thing is we are all just a roll away from being in a world of hurt.

Moore, according to Yahoo, does not see downloading as a problem unless pirated copies receive money.

Well, I think all of the bills for my heart attack treatment on may 19th came now, and I'm looking at around $38,000 out of pocket. From what I've heard, thats a very low price for someone with no insurance.

I'm going to check the movie out when theres a couple of free hours. I saw Moore on a couple of interview shows and some of the stories are just sad. Babies dying because the ER they go to is not "in-network" so the hospital denies treatment... unreal.

For the most part, yes. Insurance companies dictate to doctors your treatments. Prescriptions are priced extremely high (bottle of acid reducers cost me $170 for 15).

Many people in this country avoid going in for physicals, hold off on needed procedures because of the price. Medicine has become something we do when it's absolutely necessary. There is little preventative medicine, and if the bills get too high for an insurance company, they'll find a way to stop paying and cancel your plans. Have a problem with that, they'll say good luck to suing them and their million dollar lawyers in court.

As long as the health insurance companies and prescription drug makers own our politicians, nothing will happen. We can whine, complain, and make noise, but money talks.

My solution would be to vote for a President who wants universal health care. Who has a good plan for it. That's the only way something will change.

Please elaborate! The movie made it seem like the UK's system was working very well..

I'd love to hear from some of you that actually live with the system.. Canadians, French and Brits.

Lots of clueless people here.
I'll speak to what I know and nothing else.
Someone I know very well had to do a MRI in fucking Cannes where Mr Moore is a hero at every festival.
He had to wait 3 months to schedule an appointment because in that great country of France who has mostly free medecine, there are only 2 MRI's for the southeast of France which encompass over 3 millions people !!!!

In Paris, if you need extensive medical attention such as a transplant, then you'd better have money or else you will be put in a waiting list with the other "proletaires". Unless of course you are wealthy, then you can go to the hospital in Neuilly which happens to be the American Hospital btw.

Sure, health care sucks in the US, but if people actually stopped complaining and signed up for fucking medical insurance instead of leaving their lazy fat ass on their couch while watching "American Retards" then maybe the system wouldn't suck that much.

And for the American haters, try going to an emergency room in the UK or Italy or Spain and you will be acquainted with what a hospital looked like in the 50's!!!

If Cuba had such great medical conditions, why would Cuban prefer being eaten alive by sharks than staying with Fidel???????

The American government has screwed up everything it's touched: The current government run health programs, SS, taxes, education.....it will be a cold day in hell when I vote to let it decide where/when I go for medical treatment.

I'm 45 - I've had AWESOME healthcare my entire life. Yes I pay a lot for medical insurance but it's less than I pay for my car and I'm a helluva lot more important than my car!!

I don't care if the US brings in socialized medicine but I want to be able to opt out with my money and my body

The Canadian system is far from perfect. But I would still take it over the American system. The problem in Canada is you get far to many people going in for common colds and flu's and tie up the resources for the people with more dire needs. I still believe the system needs a user fee to visit the doctor to help pay the bills and make people think twice before going. Nothing serious in fees but just enough to give it a second thought if all you got is a stuffy nose.

In it's essence, every time we go to the polls, it's a possible "revolution."

Every time a Republican has taken the seat from a Democrat or vice-versa - in any post, it's been a mini peaceful revolution.

The ability to overthrow our government is in our constitution. Our framers were wise enough to allow for it... via peaceful means.

If you have a problem with the way things work, exercise your first amendment rights, organize, and help do something about it.

Actually alot of the people that get screwed the worse have medical insurance. My father had a heart attack in the UK when on business and got excellent medical care.He said it wasnt fancy but it was clean and they took good care of me.

I absolutely believe that when you need good care in the US, you generally get great care with minimal waiting. In my case, 3.5 days after a heart attack I was home posting on message boards. Lots of tests, drugs, surgery without waiting. Cost equivalent to 10 yrs at $300/month.

When I left my previous job in 2000, I had something like 90 days through COBRA to pick up the cost of what my previous insurance had been to keep it going. Back then I simply could not trade eating and electricity for health insurance, so I had to let it lapse.

I'll pick up some personal insurance soon if I can find it. In NY it's a bitch for the self employed, as the hospital financial assistance woman told me flat out.

And for the American haters, try going to an emergency room in the UK or Italy or Spain and you will be acquainted with what a hospital looked like in the 50's!!!

If Cuba had such great medical conditions, why would Cuban prefer being eaten alive by sharks than staying with Fidel???????
;;; got a splinter up your ass ?????

I know when I worked for company here in the US who had Canadian employees, any Canadian employee who could afford it bought additional supplemental insurance.

The only travel insurance I buy is from Medjet - it will fly me back to my choice of hospital in the US from a foreign country. You guys might want to get treated elsewhere but I'm happy getting my care here

If your two news choices are Fox and MM, you might want to broaden your info sources

Good job Moore!
Watched it last night - good effort by Moore to cover the subject

to bad he left us out:

Funny enough, Moore admitted at the conference that he researched Norway as well, but thought it was way too weird how good the health care is over there. “Norway is so crazy good, and so ridiculous, more ridiculous than France, they send you for a week to the Canary Islands at a spa. We got so [freaked] out by that, we just couldn’t put it in.”

:/
