When he started being an idiot, they did the standard stuff, they grounded him, made him do extra chores...he would sneak out...threaten his parents. They put their son in therapy, they also went to family therapy...they tried everything including a summer of "tough love boot camp" that was recommended by the cops. Nothing worked. Last we heard he was in and out of jail, and on welfare.

The thing is, you can't automatically blame the parents, the trouble is, given the same environment, some kids will grow up great, others end up bad seeds....genetics? peer pressure? Who the hell knows.

Those parents can still be made to pay for the damage their brat does. Period.

Same with this instance, the example in this thread. She may have had a cheque for $1200 and that kid may have either destroyed it or found some way to cash it. Either way it has to be paid back to her, and if the kid can't pay then it should fall to his parents to cover it. Even if they are asy you say "Great parents" I say tough shit.... someone has to compensate the victim, or should have to.

I'm simply no longer accepting any excuses anyone here might be wanting to come up with. Not all parents are bad parents, granted... but that's really immaterial. Their wages should be garnisheed until the damage is covered.

FILE A COMPLAINT!!! the DA will have to do any prosecuting.. BUT I WOULD do it for sure.. .and if i had any financial loss because of this - I WOULD recover those costs in CIVIL court.

And... theft of all kinds has to stqart somewhere. You will be doing them a favor in the long run to teach them the lesson now - its obvious their parents have failed in that regard.

Catch the bastards on clear cctv.
Make copy and bring in to law enforcement, bug them until they take some action, even if it just is a few hundred hours community service.
Bring them and thier parents into small claims with extra tape (name both children and parents since laws vary by state). Sue for any and all damages including cost of having to ad a cctv system.
Yes I was also a kid I did a lot of stupid shit, and yes someone finally turned my ass in and that made a big change in my life.

they need to be punished by their parents. do not get the law involved.. simply take a few pics with a $40 motion sensor cam, give the pics to their parents and let them know that in all fairness, the pictures are proof of a Federal Offense... but you've decided to leave it up to them. Then shake the parents and kids hands and leave politely.

To many parents today are not parents. They will defend the little cock suckers unless your lucky enough to find a real parent now a days with that age group of a kid. Even then you may just get them grounded for a week or something in their room with thier PC, Ipod, Xbox, and everything else.

Tomorrow I have to get in touch with the post office and I will be getting both of their names and addresses so I can prosecute. Who knows what else they have taken over the 2 years I've lived here. I am LIVID!

I doubt that much will be done to these kids since they are only 11 and 14. You should still file a complaint and see what happens. It will probably scare the hell out of them and they will think twice about doing something that dumb. I doubt they know what a serious offense stealing mail is.
