What settings do you have for the CPU fan in your BIOS? When this m/b was in a smaller case and it was a hot day I could hear the CPU fan going sick (4000+ RPM, very noisy) but now it's in a larger case I cannot get it to go faster than 2500... no matter what the temp. For example, I was converting some RAW image files and the CPU temp was floating around 81-86C, PC Probe was lighting up and telling me that things were waaayyyyy too hot, but the fan speed stayed stuck at 2500. I don't mind it going faster & noiser when the CPU is working hard.

I have the fan set to PWM & Performance

Anyone run into this issue before?

i dont pay attention, if the hardware wont perform i run it till it breaks and replace with something better.

I never trusted those variable fan speed settings. I set it for always on, full speed if its a stock fan. If you wanna forget about it completely buy a better heatsink and fan, like a Zalman or something.

what kind of CPU? 86C isn't necessarily that bad.

I had that issue before with an asus awhile back. I just bought a larger fan, heatsink combo.

My inspiron 5150 has an asus mb It's been running around 68c idle !

I'm going to buy some thermal paste and compressed air tomorrow.

The last time my laptop was running hot thermal paste solved the prob!

Ha, I enabled speed stepping.

This dropped my cpu temp by 50 degrees.

not to mention the fan is soo quiet now, wow

86C is horrible !! thats about 190degrees Fahrenheit !

It's a Pentium D, I know they run hot but I think 86C is probably a little excessive!

I updated the BIOS and noticed that "AI NOS" overclocking was set... disabling that seems to have given me a bit of breathing space, but otherwise the fan speed stays stuck at 2500-2600 max.

budz: how do you enable speedstep? I'm pretty sure it's on by default, and Windows XP supports it... if you know otherwise then I'd appreciate some more info.

I have my fan set at max as my table box i keep the case of my pc is pretty tight, so it needs good ventilation

right click on desktop > Screen Saver > Power > Power Schemes:

set this drop down box to portable/laptop. I believe a reboot is required.

This has helped my laptop temperatures no matter what's going on.
I was around 140-154 Fahrenheit just idle with 0% CPU usage !

My temp went from 154 Fahrenheit down to 104 Fahrenheit !
If I open a lot of intensive programs it gets upto 115F now

No more annoying loud fan, LOL.

i got two 8800GTX video cards in my box-o-fun and they both run @ ~170F
core duo runs at about ~105f on both cores.

its gets hot in here ...

Hmm, that may work on your laptop, but it made no difference on my desktop.

A little while ago I was trying to fool around with setting the base CPU speed lower then "overclocking" it to its native speed when it was loaded (eg 2.6GHz idle, 3.1GHz loaded), in order to drop the idle temp a little... I didn't manage to get it working though.

I think what I also need is a variable speed case fan. There are two 120mm fans at the rear which are the "silent" type, but that really just means they run slower... it would probably be better to replace these with a faster fan that varies speed with temperature, so if things do get a little too warm then they can rev up and make some momentary noise.

I had this problem and the cmos has a toggle box in it that you can choose to have your puter run in quiet mode. If this is checked it will not kick on the higher fan output. Hope that helps.

Get better cooling system....
I have ASUS motherboard and CoolerMonster Hyper6+

It's monster cooler and keeps my cpu frozen even on low fan speeds that makes him less noisier... if I start playing or do some video encoding... etc... the fan speed increases and the temperature stays at the same value. It's maybe little more noisier than, but I can't hear that shit from the sounds from game or music...

Yeah, once I upgraded there was an "AI Quiet" option which when enabled runs the fan slower (and therefore the CPU hotter), the opposite of what I want to do.

With that disabled, the fan is back to 2500-2600 max.

125C junction is the typical point at which damage can occur
100C junction is the typical max point you want silicon to run at for long term reliability.

Intel reduces the temp spec further to push up the speed. Look up your exact model processor on their site to get the max recommended operating temp.

Asus P5LD2 Deluxe, Pentium D 830 with stock Intel heatsink, 800MHz FSB.

I've looked up the thermal parameters for this CPU and it's a little confusing, but I think this is how it works...

- design target for the CPU is 130W
- real world consumption may go above this
- at 130W max temp for this CPU should be 69.8C

This is based on the CPU casing temperature, not internal die temp which the motherboard utility reports. I found an article which suggests the difference between those two points is about 18C, so that means that in theory I could go up to about 88C reported die temperature before there's potential for serious problems... I wasn't far from that earlier today!

I'm sure I saw another article which says that the cores are individually throttled (clock speed reduced) when they begin to overheat, but I can't find that now.

I found a utility called ThrottleWatch which shows if the CPU is TM1 throttling... but it seems the Pentium D can do TM2 throttling as well. I'm not sure if this util correctly reports that.

I set the BIOS to overclock by 10% and use a less aggressive fan profile but strangely enough the CPU temp is similar when it's under load... perhaps it IS throttling but I just can't see it. I'm not sure if I am game to try overclocking it further to see what happens.
