Anyone want to give me a quick lesson on "fair use" ...?

As it pertains to copyrighted images.

Mainly images of celebrity and professional sports athletes (in gear) accompanied by text/stories that may not be flattering. The "may not be flattering" part is what I'm concerned over as it might encourage copyright holders to seek action.

I'm doing some research now but I'd like to hear from GFY'ers. What are the do's and dont's?

Thanks

So, basically, no you can't use those pictures - you are merely using them as illustration.

You probably could use those pictures if you used them in a transformative way, though. For example, if you saw a photograph of a celeb on a news site as mere illustration, and you discovered something new *about the photograph*. (eg standard press photos of a celeb which unintentionally show that they have drugs, where you indicate the point of interest on the photograph and write an article about that).

The wikipedia article is thousands of pages of law summarized in a few hundred words.

Anything quicker would not be "quick", it would be "inaccurate". Even the wikipedia article isn't enough, to be honest - you need a lawyer.
