Mutt,

We have been hearing rumors / stories like this for awhile.. Dvd sales are down - tons of units are not moving....

As far as the net goes - it will keep doing ok but one question - Do cable and Sat. providers give away free adult movies / porn? NO

When will our industry learn.. teasers are fine but if we slow down or stop giving the ranch away for free then ppl will have to buy..... at least more ppl will...

</end of rant that ppl have talked about for yrs.>

I love this line at the end of the article:

"Meanwhile, guys on the Internet- ne'er do wells so to speak- are making a fortune."

"ne'er do wells"

this whole article is a piece of shit.

the only difference is, on the web, anyone can put up a free site and give away "the ranch"...on cable/tv that can't happen

one thing i will say:

"Stop fucking free content"

A specially TGP owners have to put their hats on table and they should think for a wile.

if i was a surfer, i could cum just by looking what is free out there, afterwords who cares if there are gigs of full dvds inside member area?

its not the tgp's that are the problem its the BT's and now the BT's are getting more ballsy and hosting the content themselves. We are talking giving away 30 min scenes that's someone else's work. Someone has to come out with a armor plated drm solution, that person will become very rich.

I hear you there on the bt's.... Skeptical on the drm solution right now - so many things get cracked and hacked....

I am a big 1st ammed person - big on less gov. regs per adult, etc but you know sometimes I wonder if the us govt didn't allow "free porn" shown, how would that affect us? Of course companies outside of the usa would still do it, so I guess it couldn't help much but I wonder...

yep Jace that pretty much sums it up there.

even if the cable companies could legally get away with some free adult - why would they? it's a commodity / product like other things. You want it, you pay for it.

movie studios, television studios, and the RIAA have invested tens of MILLIONS(I'd imagine) into finding a DRM solution...and how long do those last? They are either cracked in 2 days or are so intrusive that users end up backlashing.

Video companies will keep eating shit till they get online pretty much.
Infact I will go so far to say that the old video industry is finished unless of course they are branching into Cable PPV and Utilizing the web.

However thats not The End.

Far from it, it's just the beginning.
It is called An Of Evolution Of Prime Time.

Mainstream media has been feeling the flex of the internet for quite some time, infact they are either not fairing well as they are set in the old school mind frame, or gaining ground and recovering by using the web with thier media.

Take a look around and see how Mainstream Television is adapting.

Adult Entertainment has already adapted, and it has nothing to do with whats free and not free.

Nobody ever liked buying physical porn. It's taboo and embarrassing for most. The decline of the VHS/DVD industry shouldn't be a surprise to anyone now that the privacy of internet porn is here.

The porn industry will never die, men need it to jerk off to.

The way people view it has changed in the last 50 years. I might be out on a few dates so please be kind.

1957 = It was a few 8mm films, photographs and the written word
1967 = The porn industry started to flourish in Holland and Denmark.
1977 = The video era was in full swing.
1987 = I was selling videos mail order, major leap.
1997 = Porn on the Internet.
2007 = More porn than you can possible ask for, 8mm, photographs, VHS are dead, DVD is dying and the future for many is going to be different.

But one thing runs through the last 50 years as solid as you could wish for.

THE NUMBERS OF PEOPLE CONSUMING PORN ARE GROWING.

And maybe they are not consuming your porn but that are consuming porn. A good move for the future would be the processing companies demanding we only sell DRM. It would need something like that.

But the way we sell porn in 2017 will be very different from today. Mutt I think from many of your posts you are suffering today. Stop and think about how you sell tomorrow to make sure you're not flipping burgers yourself.

I'm a producer and what ever happens we will survive. Even if the free sites close down paysites they will need to buy porn, they can't keep rotating what they have.

I would like someone to show real statistics showing that the porn industry earned less this year then the previous 3-5 years. In my opinion there has been no decline in sales... only increases in competition. Some of you need to tighten up your game...

that's not a surprise - no matter what happens there will be something of an industry left and being in the porn biz is enticing for a lot of people so you'll always have people giving it a go - that's addressed in the article.

"It's wild. People seem to think it's over. Not necessarily. You're always going to get new guys. There's always the new investor who doesn't know. There's always some guy who needs to wash some money that doesn't know. But it's going to be more diluted."

the reason for the proliferation of new talent agencies and the price of models going up is mostly because of what's happening on the Internet side of the business. We are in a bit of a desperation stage - people are throwing a lot of shit against the wall hoping something will stick - there have been tons of exclusive content programs and paysites popping up lately.

This isn't going to happen overnight, not as if people still aren't making lots of money in online porn - but people act as if they know that the porn pie is still growing - none of them know that - this industry has more people 'in the know' than the CIA.

I can name off a ton of sites/programs that are shadows of their former selves - of course the idiots will come in and offer their trenchant commentary again that's because 'they didn't adapt - dinosaurs - new breed is taking over' - notice that nobody from any siginificant program repeats that bullshit - that's because they see the signs too.

It doesn't seem to me that the industry is dying so much as it is moving. It started out in theatres and not a lot of people went because they didn't want to be caught in a porn theatre. Then home video came out and more people bought it because now they could get it and take it home, but there were still a lot of people that didn't want to be seen in a porn store. Mail order opened up a whole new avenue to those people. Somehow porn wasn't dirty if you bought it through a classy looking catalog. Now porn is available on your computer with full privacy. Nobody knows but you so it has exploded.

There are not fewer people buying, there are more. There isn't less porn being created, there is more. There isn't less money in this industry, there is more. The industry is not dying, it is growing and expanding. The difference is now the wealth of the industry is spread out over many people instead of few.

Look at it like this. Right now The middle eastern countries that control oil have a very small number of people that drill for oil and sell it. They make a truckload of money and most people that use the oil have no access to selling it or making any money off of it. What if along came a chance for anyone that wanted it to get into the oil business? You could work part time out of your house and do it all with little or no start up money. There would be a lot of people that would do exactly that. These people would compete with each other and the big companies and it would drive down prices. There would be no less oil being packaged and sold, for that matter there would be more actually more than before. There would be no less oil being bought, there is probably going to be more, it is simply that the wealth of the oil is now spread out over a larger area.

The industry will never die. Some within it may die off because of changing delivery systems, but the industry as a whole is going to do nothing but grow. As broadband becomes widely available and more and more countries get wired it opens up that much more of an audience.

I am typically a glass half full kind of guy, and I still think the industry will make it through some of its current growing pains.

I do think about this though, informal survey for your male friends. How many guys actually own porn, specifically DVD's that were produced in the last 3 years? The majority of people I know get their rocks off to either free internet porn, or DVD's that were "borrowed" from friends collections and passed around, some even still have VHS tapes. So if this plays out across the masses, then how long will the current consumer be satisfied with existing free content.

If the industry were to cut off the flow of free content right now, it would still take years before the average consumer demanded something new and be tired of the existing works in circulation on hard drives and BT's.

The DVD porn industry has made the mistake of thinking that more is better. If you check the total number of units moved, that number probably hasn't shrunk much, but the total number of titles getting put out has gone nutty. Companies use to put out maybe 2 titles a month are now putting out sometimes 2 titles per week.

On the other side, they are getting squeezed by the online porn people converting their content to DVD. With the production costs often long since paid off, the costs to putting the stuff out is next to nothing. If they move 500 units, it is about 75% profitable.

The porn industry has overwhelmed the marketplace with way too much porn, and there aren't enough new customers to buy the DVDs.

Combine that also with great online porn, less and less mom and pop rental shops, torrents, and that many of the big mainstream video chains won't stock adult, and you are pretty much seeing how the industry has eaten itself.
