The movie is loosely based on history as reflected in Frank Miller's graphic novel by the same name.

While most of the movie is one giant action sequence, it's underlying theme of love and sacrifice of a man/woman for their country, for their family, and for their compatriots sets an example that we don't see very often in today's society .

Not to mention the special effects.

Wonderful movie.
