The Free Speech Coalition Tries To Back Door The Piracy Roundtable

from my eponymous website

The Free Speech Coalition Tries To Back Door The Piracy Roundtable
By MikeSouth

To understand this fully you need to know that The gutless, worthless jackals at the FSC recently accepted a 10,000 dollar donation from Adult Friend Finder (AFF). AFF is one of the largest monetary supporters of pirate sites on the planet.

So last night a group of content producers in LA got togetherfor a round table on how to deal with the piracy issue, and they made a mistake by inviting Jeffery Douglas to be the Moderator.

Douglas, who is beholden to the FSC, wasted no time in sneaking in a couple of FSC members posing as content producers (they weren?t) so that the FSC, who is a whore for anyone with a check, could try to wrangle control of the meeting.

AVN also showed up but they got turned away this meeting was only for content producers and distributors.

The good news is that the Free Speech Cabal was summarily rejected and essentially told to sit in the back of the truck and shut the fuck up, while the roundtable did it?s business.

Kudos to them for that. I also want to acknowledge someone who has drawn criticism here in the past, that being Attorney Greg Picconelli, who stepped up and offered the group PRO BONO legal services with no limits. Now that?s stepping up to the plate and I applaud him for it.

The group further organized and identified a plan of attack that I will not outline here. Suffice it to say I hope they are successful.

Next time?Y?all have Greg moderate and kick that sorry fuck Douglas and his whore the FSC out on their asses. All the FSC wanted to do was gain control, pretend they are doing something (like they always do) and keep cashing checks from people profiting from stealing our hard work.

"AFF is one of the largest monetary supporters of pirate sites on the planet."

Thats kinda stretching it. AFF has made alot of people alot of money, has supported the industry. Promoters of AFF running stolen content sites needs to be nipped in the ass, but hardly the largest supporter of Pirate sites.

Many pirate sites run ad's for various programs other than AFF.

Yet almost 99.9% of them run AFF in heavy rotation or placement.

Considering their lack of success with 2257 and some other issues, I don't think I'd put them in charge of anything.

Since it's the topic here, I'm pretty sure I caught the FSC reps say that though AFF has promised the funds to the FSC, they haven't actually followed through and delivered any yet.

I wonder what the story there is.

It would seem that the FSC may be getting the worst of both worlds... criticism because of who they accept funding from... but no actual funding to show for it.

Anyone know the scoop?

This is exactly the reason why FSC and ASACP were not invited to the meeting: this was a meeting by content people for content people about the issue of content, not another way for FSC to collect funds and to take on another "cause" that has nothing to do with them.

Memo to FSC: You laid down with the dogs that profit from stolen content and copyright violations. You got fleas. Don't be surprised when nobody wants to play.

As for Mr Douglas, well, SHAME ON YOU!

Very interesting, so lars makes a few threads bragging about donating and didn't donate at all? I wonder if ASACP got their money from him?

1) Douglas didn't moderate. If you'd actually been there, or even gotten accurate information of what happened there, you'd know that ... instead of going off on your usual rant about how horrible FSC is. You can read as accurate a story about the conference as I was able to write at AVN.com. (Sorry; can't post a link since I haven't posted to this list often enough.)

2) The Piracy Roundtable was news, and at AVN, we cover news -- sometimes even when the newsmakers don't particularly want that coverage. Only a few adult sites actually do that, yours not being one of them.

3) I am a "content producer" -- just not the same kind of content that most of the rest produce. And my shit gets pirated as well; I've seen it. Moreover, I promised whoever was guarding the door at the meeting that if I were allowed to attend, I would promise not to write about what I saw/heard in the meeting, but would base my story on whatever transpired at the "press conference" that was supposed to be held afterwards (which, BTW, didn't happen; I had to peg individual attendees as they left the room). But I would point out that it doesn't appear that anything happened in the meeting that would have compromised anyone attending or anything that was said if I had written about it -- especially since, unlike your own site, I don't write gossip or make personal attacks (well, except regarding Luke Ford occasionally, but he isn't really a member of the industry.) Perhaps the folks in charge of the next meeting, having seen my story on this one, will rethink their position on allowing press -- real press, that is; not gossip columnists -- into the meeting so the story can be more accurate.

AFF is the biggest supporter of pirate sites hands down, find me one other program that is advertised on more torrent sites. There's a few other programs, but not as widespread as AFF.

Mark,

I believe that you fully understood before even arriving that adult content producers were the only people being admitted. You still tried. Xbiz respected our wishes and also ended up with a great story in the end. I do respect you for not pulling some shady, sideways shenanigan like donning a waiters outfit and humping sandwiches through the back door disguised as a hotel employee. Not everyone had the respect to oblige our wishes. That will not be forgotten. Sometimes people just need to understand and respect that not everything needs to involve them. It was a PRIVATE meeting. I do not understand what people don't get about that. Everyone is so afraid that they are going to miss something in this industry and get their feelings hurt so easily about the littlest things. Subsequent meetings that are OPEN to all will happen. There will also be many more CLOSED meetings of the board and such that will not be promoted and will also not allow outside members. Sadly, thats just how its going to be. Great reporting, Thank you. You're a class act.

Airek

Mark, with due respect:

1) The meeting was for producers of adult content (image and video) Not for magazine writers or others. Anyone who writes a blog or types a post on this board also produces content, but that isn't the point, is it?

2) If you went as media, you should do as reporters do, which is sit quietly, take noted, and report what happened. If you went as a content producer, then you shouldn't have been reporting.

3) The apparent actions of certain people who are beholden to or part of the FSC shows exactly the reason why this group was limited to the content producers. The last thing this process needs is a third party group to jump in front of the wave and try to get political milage.

4) Any group or individual that is beholden to or part of the companies that profit from copyright violating sites need to stay far away. Groups like FSC and ASACP are apparently taking money from companies like AFF, and that is a real issue.

5) I am sure that the group will issue press releases and updates when they have something to say. I am sure you could write a story based on that.

Enjoy.

Maybe AVN can interview their "partners" Adbrite about how they sell traffic for The Pirate Bay and other Torrent sites.

Maybe the Free Speech Coalition can develop formal guidelines on piracy. That's the right way to proceed.

Oh ya they are GOOD at stuff like that...they will do it and then sit on their collective sorry asses and summarily IGNORE it

The FSC's job is to get those vague and indecipherable 2257 regulations thrown out of court.

By all rights that should be their one and only task until such time as they have accomplished it.

If they do so, well and good

If they can't, they need to disband because they'll have then shown themselves to be quite useless.

AVN has moved away from AdBrite and set up their own site that is not affiliated with AdBrite any more. Happened a few weeks ago and may still be in transition.

I'm not shitting you, I just woke up from a nap where I had a dream that I was calling the whitehouse and actually got thought to bush to give him my complaints on 2257 record keeping and the stresses It was going to have on smaller companies. Even when I sleep I tell ya.

IMO, FSC should stick to issues that try to hinder our Free Speach, mainly obscenity cases / porn stuff. That issue alone should be more than enough to keep them busy. While it is nice that they would like to help out with other issues it seems their involvement is problematic at best. Take for example the situation with dot xxx, as i remember the FSC was offered money for their support of dot xxx and some on their board wanted to take it and others didn't. With the Piracy stuff, how can they accept money from sites like AFF and try to help the rest of us fight piracy, it would be a conflict of interest. Much like the ASACP accepting donations from AFF which fund Torent sites that exploit children. However they just made lame bullshit excuses to try to justify it.

One thing we can all agree on is fighting obscenity and needing protection from the govt, I hope the FSC stays focused on that.

But are they actually receiving those monies?

Maybe it's neither here nor there since 'intent' is the only real issue in the minds of some, but I've already asked for clarification twice in this thread with no response from anyone involved.

It's kind of discouraging - and I'm pondering whether or not the issue merits it's own thread.

I agree. They have already lost all credibility when it comes to piracy.
