Looking for hosting that can handle many wordpress blogs....

I have a dedicated server with a hosting company. A 60 mbps dedicated server I mainly use for galleries. Since I have a lot of free bandwidth to burn there I decided to start building blogs, and they told me it was fine and the server could handle them, which is pretty obvious for such a server.

Guess what, I installed my first wordpress in my first domain and the server started crashing on a daily basis with only 1k traffic in my blog... Have to restart apache all the time. Not to mention that all my gals were down too.. Pretty crazy, don't you think? That server should be able to handle at least 100 blogs with wordpress and it's not even able to handle one!!!!!

So, now I am looking for a serious company who can guarantee me that I can have 10 sites in 10 different ips and domains running in one server and not having any problems. Maybe a 10 mbps server will be fine.

Can anyone guarantee me that? Can you post your rates please?

10mbps unmetered, with 95th rule on a powerful enough configuration to handle many wordpress blogs and not suffering overloading when i install plugins or anything. And of course solid mysql server.

Am I asking too much for 1 server?

Lol, even my free blogspot and thumblogger blogs load and work faster and better than my paid blogs. They never go down.

WordPress is, quite bluntly, a really badly designed pile of shit. Not knowing your server specs, I can't say if it was WP, or the host at fault. Only 1k, though, most likely the host.

There are plugins to cache the data, and even optimizations to not use 400,000 SQL calls for each page query, but unless you pay for a damn decent machine, or pay for someone to alter it to do what you wish: You will not be happy with the results.

Really? I don't understand then, how all those wordpress porn blogs do to handle 100k daily traffic. I have seen a lot of those, and they use wordpress. And they not hosted in any special or extraordinary configuration.
Mine just crashed with 1k per day and I'm on a dedicated server.

I have even seen wordpress blogs running in virtual hosting accounts with 10k daily traffic and no problems. Or I am really missing something and everyone is changing the wordpress code to optimize it or I think you are wrong man.

Like I said, you never posted your setup. Obviously, a 1.2Ghz Celeron with 256M can be 'Dedicated', but it's still a pile of shit.

Most people who are using WP at the very least use WPCache which uses eTags to render a page and serve up a pre-rendered version if it exists, thus negating the whole spamminess of WP, itself.

As I originally suggested, Stock WP is quite awful.

To start things off... if you have a gallery server pushing 60 Mbps, I don't think I would recommend adding a bunch of blogs to it. Yes, it can handle it, but you are really adding a lot of extra variables and potential risks by adding blogs to that server. If those galleries are your lifeline, don't mess with it. Get another server.

With that said, we have a lot of affiliates running multiple blogs on their servers. I personally have several blogs on my personal server plus many other additional sites.

I would be happy to talk to you about the various options we can offer you at Phatservers. Please feel free to ICQ me at 147479144 or e-mail me at [email protected] to discuss. I will be around all evening.

Of course it is a powerful server, that was already obvious when I posted my message. Intel core 2 duo and 2gb of memory.

However, it will be interesting to see who can guarantee me that my wordpress blogs are going to work in their hosting.

I want to know which hosting company can guarantee me that.

By the way... I highly doubt you need 10 Mbps. If anybody tries selling you that without talking to you about your needs first, run away from them. They are not trying to help you.

Starting out you should be fine with a one Mbps server, assuming you aren't giving away massive movies and spamming AOL chat rooms, do people still do that? What you need is juice, proper server tweaking, and proper blog tweaking.

If you're serving static content, you can push over 100mbit with a P3 and a finely tuned webserver, just FYI.

2GB is a little low for that much volume with both galleries AND dynamically created pages.

I have some clients with WP and lost of page views ( 100 K a day ). On a dedicated XP 3400 with ! gig mem, it just froze ( never crashed as such ... ).

I switched one of them to a virtual account ( yes, those awfull virtual account that are always down according to Pro ) on a dual xeon 3.0GHZ. I just had to upgrade the mem to 4 gigs, and it is puring like a well fed pussy ....

He uses about 2 Mbps , so roughly 350 gigs month....

So , get CPU and mostly memory . And you should consider co-location so you can upgrade those features on the cheap side.

Now, let the flaming begin ....

He is in Europe, so it is 3:00 am there : a new day

It's good to have to decrease the CPU load on your system since it caches a fully rendered page rather than running through PHP and MySQL every time. It pretty much sticks itself in front of it, and if you have the same e-tag and/or your cache isn't older than X, it'll send the pre-rendered page at quite a savings.

However, it's kind of hokey how it works, and does not work well with gzip server compression, so you can't compress your text data.

Yes, but It's not my style man.. I will keep with them for galleries. been with them for 3 years and no problems.. And I will move my blogs to another server.

BTW, I am taking notes of all your offers guys.

Also the template plays a big role too. I was not using a really heavy template, but also not using the default light template of wordpress.. Maybe some templates could make the situation worse. But anyway, if most of you offer sql, wordpress and templates optimizing to fit my needs, sounds good.

I just noticed that you want a guarantee.

I'll give you that guarantee. I'll even set you up and give you a first month totally free. That's better than a guarantee. I will prove we can do it, and you put nothing down.

I'm in a good mood tonight. Take me up on my offer. :-)

Truthfully you don't need a big plan. Talk to mike or Gerard at Webair and take the lowest priced dedicated special then scale up when you need to.

A 3.4ghz machine is all you need. 1-3mbs of bandwidth should be enough as well. When done correctly blogs are the least resource intensive form of traffic generation we have seen in a long time. Lots of people run nice sized networks on virtual hosting.

This is suprising to me since I here so many people say they use wordpress.
What would you say is the biggest flaw in it's design?

I don't use it so I have no clue of what it should or should not do.

I can vouch for Sly & Phatservers. Running a blog with 4-5k daily using wordpress on a shared account there with no problems whatsoever. I'm not using a WP-Cache plugin either.

It uses too many SQL calls, it has no native caching mechanism, and they seem more interested in making the AJAX entry system prettier than making it more efficient or useful.

People use it because designers have learned it, and it's pretty damn easy to shit out a WP template, and everyone's written a post tool to use it's XMLRPC.

Personally, for all blog/cms stuff, I prefer TextPattern. The code is still fairly crappy, but it's nowhere near that of WP, it's easy to change functions and display routines so you can make it look like anything.. and it has it's own XMLRPC system, too, so you can even use stuff like autoposting with it.

It's also tons, tons faster.

I've taken Foobies traffic for 4 days on a plain TextPattern install. It was on the Foobies front page solid, they loved that site!), and it kicked up the server load, but didn't kill it. I ate a hell of a lot of bandwidth, though.
