Wow. kind of an uneducated rant on the electronic music scene. Most of the good stuff doesnt go "wechoo wechoo wechoo".

I'd Like him to say that to Mark Farina or Doc Martin. They are getting paid 8-10 k for a one hour set. Not bad for playing records. That is for small underground type performances. Holiday sets are much more.

Also most of the DJ's play their own produced music. although If they make a recording for distribution. They need to get a permission license from the producer to make a CD mix set. Just like everyone else in the music industry. So there is no theft there.

Making electronic music is no task either. Try using Reason software and make it blend nice with some good breaks and some real bass. You will find it takes skill and an ear for sound. Mixing on the other hand is a different ball game. It takes precise timing and coordination to keep the dance floor popping.

Ahh the drugs. I have to admit the music and the vibe is definitely better with a hit of "E". On the other hand so does Pink Floyd. I will never listen that album the same way I did when I took acid and listened to it. I think Henry Rollins will agree unless they didn't give him a backstage pass to the London tour.

A Raver explained it to me at a party on a boat in the SF Bay. Dj Onions was on the decks btw. He said "You know the reason why 98% of the world hates this electronic music scene?" It is too bright for the mind to accept.

Raves and underground house events bring peace and unity through music. I think the real reason Henry Rollins hates the scene and it's music is that there in no violence or anger at these events.

Rollins is far from uneducated but that is your opinion and I would be going against all my ideals if I didn't respect your right to have it.

"to bright for the mind to accept" I disagree much like pop music and bubble gum rock it is music with no message and I think that is what creates the distaste for the music

This guy sounds like a fucking douche that has never been to a rave.

As a DJ, that shit actually pissed me off. We're fucking record player players? It takes a long ass time to learn how to mix properly. 3-6 months for most people to learn to beat match alone. I would love to see this chump try and spin.

I did not imply that Rollins was uneducated. I merely stated the fact that his take on the electronic scene was uneducated. Due to the fact he reffered to the music as wechoo wechoo wechoo. that In my mind is uneducated. The same reason we do not refer to Jimi Hendrix as "whah whah' twang twang.

I respect and admire Henry for his views but this one I have to disagree on.

As for the music sending a message. It doesn't send and message it sends a feeling.

As far as Djing. I bought some 1200's (Record Players) 10 years ago. I still cannot match a beat. So there is some skill involved. So just some normal bloke cannot go up there and mix wechoo wecoo wechoo.

There are merits to both sides of this message versus no message argument.

Huey Lewis, unashamed purveryor of mindless pop music in the 80's, summed up his music something like this in an interview a couple years ago:

"Everyone is pushing a message. Our message is that messages are overrated, and that SOMETIMES it's okay to just have fun and not think too much about the important things. There are enough musicians pushing an agenda or a topic, and they are important. It is easily as important to be able to tune everything out and just enjoy the moment without giving everything such importance. In times that are already taxing, why NOT take a few minutes to enjoy the moment?"

Wise thought, I think.

He went on to say that he and The News had never set out to change anything, or really even add anything to the pop lexicon. They simply wanted to provide a bit of mindless comfort.

Nothing wrong with either point of view. They simply serve different purposes.

i completely disagree...but to each their own eh?

electronic music doesn't have an overt message like, "do this, or don't do that". it's about feeling the music deep inside, dancing, living life to the fullest. it's primal, it's tribal...drum and bass and beats that you can feel deep inside your chest. i know i sound like a raver girl, but for me, there's really no other music that accomplishes that.
nothing quite moves me like a good dnb, house, or dub set.

Henry Rollins is likely smarter than 90% of the people who have posted in this thread (me included) and has a big enough resume behind him to justify his position. He also comes from a background of very intense and very personal music, certainly nothing that would ever come out of a computer or be beat matched to anything else.

He is entitled to an opinion... He just wants to fuck on the floor and break shit.

Henry is the man, this whole rave and techno culture is about people who are trying to express that they don't have anything to express..

I'm not a huge techno fan but does anybody else see the irony in a punk singer calling other music "shit"?

Punk (more like hardcore / alternative / near metal in Rollins' case) is something created from scratch. It isn't an assemblage of other people's work, it isn't some goof yelling "wave your hands in the air" over someone else's record... it is real emotion, from the original artist.

While DJing is a skill (and some consider it an art) the underlying material is someone else's art. It's like putting a picasso through a photocopier, cutting it in half, and attaching a Van Gogh on the other half. It's new, yeah... but the true art didn't happen at the photocopier.

I think your metaphor is slightly different from the way the the scene works. You see the producers of electronic music make the music to be mixed along with other producers tracks. Producers make these tracks to be played by other DJ's. That is the sole purpose of making the track. So other Dj's play them at the big parties. Nothing better than to hear some big name DJ playing your homies track that he made on a PC.

Just like porn. You have content you give to your affiliates for freesites and galleries. But you don't mind what they do with it just as long as the content links to your paysite. When you see your content on a LL with a link to your site and an affiliate made it. you would be fucking stoked. Same with DJing. They play other peoples tracs and let them know their track rocks by mixing it properly and at the right time in the evening during the event.

I had to throw in some porn
