Do you have problems throwing away food ?

Although I have aristocratic ancestors, that doesn't mean that I have 'old money', as some people suggested few months ago.

So basically, in my early childhood years my family was quite poor. And I've been raised and told that "you should never throw away food", especially since "children in Africa are dying from hunger"... (although that doesnt really make much sense).

anyway, now I'm obviously doing fine financially and ocassionally I buy some food, but then somehow forget about it, then I 'find' it, check that it's in bad condition, or past its expiry date and then well, have to throw it away. And then I kinda feel guilty for a second...

But then again, isn't food just a product like everything else, someone made it, I bought it, and instead of eating, I threw it away, but it's not that this very food would be sent for free to poor kids who are dying from hunger if I didn't buy it at the store....

I just have problems throwing away cash.

When I did a major clean out of the refridgerator and freezer and set everything out to be tossed the monetary value popped into my head and got me pissed.

Thankfully I rarely toss anything out anymore except the occassional leftovers from when we went out to eat.

We are pretty good about using everything picked up at the grocery store.

It drives me crazy to throw away rotten food...

Like ASM said it's the same as throwing away cold hard cash...

I'm guilty of having to throw away bad food big time, but I am really trying to work on it. It's a waste of money and it's just a bad habit to have.

I throw away food that's bad, but if the food is still good, believe it's in the fridge.

Nothing better than mixing leftovers up into a feast.

I'm pretty sure the starving kids in Africa wouldn't want our expired food even if there was a way to give it to them. Don't sweat it.

I told someone once how I'm such a lightweight when it comes to spicy foods. Told her I once put about 5 flakes of pepper on some potatoes and literally broke out into a sweat halfway through the meal.

So as a joke that year, I received a package of hot sauce, peppers, jalapeno's, red pepper, cayan pepper etc etc etc... I've also gotten the nickname of "5 flakes" around her house.

This was years ago, and I still cant bring myself to toss out all the stuff I will NEVER use... ever!

With normal shopping I just try to be smart, but yeah I still throw crap away and I dont like to, but I figure if it winds up in a landfill it'll at least be organic. If I had a decent yard, I'd compost everything possible and that'd be not so bad.

BTW yeah, I can remember the first time my mother tried to get me to eat something I gagged on because there's starving people, and I said then lets send this to them, because it tastes gross... didnt go over very well.

Yes, I have many issues with people, whom waste food! I rarely discard food. I either take excess to the local (homeless) shelter, or I give it to my (large) cat, or the neighbour's dog.

Even though I love to cook, I truly hate watching the FoodNetwork, because I know they waste so much food! They say they have a passion for cooking and a love for food yet seeing them scrape edible food in to the trash receptacle is insulting!
I simply love and admire how Chinese (cooks) insist in little-to-no waste!

Although food is viewed as a product by some, the produce is a necessary one. More necessary as each day passes and our the earth's population continues to get larger, or go up. Most N.Americans do not realize that there is a shortage of food, especially now that many farmers are being convinced to produce vegetation which will only be used to create fuel (for vehicles, not humans).

As for expired food not being good; it is still useful (compost) in increasing the yield of the next crop! However, the idea of wrapping it in a plastic garbage bag and throwing it in a pit, or covering it with earth, is even more of an insult!

You aren't "doing fine financially" and you should stop kidding yourself. You're way too close to living paycheck to paycheck, and maybe if you'd quit buying more food than you need you could actually start planning for the future.

It makes me nuts to throw food away. Partly because I have an overseas sponsored child, and I think tend to think of him and his family when I am throwing things away.

But the main selfish reason is that I may as well just get money out of my purse and put it down the garbage disposal when I throw food out. That is money gone that I could have saved or spent on something fun.

I try to plan ahead, and really use up what I make, but sometimes I fuck that plan up.

Try to stock weekly groceries but be sure those foods will be consumed. If not, just buy some if you're hungry so you won't have any problems throwing them away.

Probably half the food in my fridge has expired. Close to everything in the main freezer should probably be thrown away and I'm pretty sure everything in the chest freezer is way past its prime. Don't even ask me about the canned goods in the basement.......I know I've had some of them pre-2K when we were all going to die.

back in brazil we had a restaurant, and we couldn't give the rest of the food for the poor people because whatever the fuck law they had, something to do with if they get poisoned you will be charged for everything.
It was like, I couldn't handle you the food, but if I throw away and you pickup it's not my problem. So we used to put some Kgs of food into very closed recipients and leave it there, and then throwing away the rest (that was a lot). Just had no option :/
Well, today I can't throw away a candy, let alone good food.
Good thing I eat on restaurants everyday :D

If it's old food and you want to die faster, sure, go ahead and eat it all.

That's a huge reason why I miss having a dog around the house. Not a thing goes to waste, whether it's end cuts, leavings on your plate you know you'll never eat, pan scrapings, whatever.... it's all good as far as the pooch is concerned.

I used to mix those morsels and leavings with a little warm water and mix it into his regular dry dog food and he'd eat it like a fiend. :D

I made a grilled cheese sandwich, but accidentally left a piece of plastic paper on one side of the slice of cheese. Upon discovering this (after attempting to take my first bite) I threw the entire sandwich away. (true story, from about 6 hours ago)
