the lake by my house froze (pic)

First time i've ever seen a frozen lake in my life. Walked across it today. There's about 10cm of ice but it was still pretty scary because i've never done it. Apparently its enough to drive my car onto though. I'll wait it out for a few more cm and drive out onto it and take some pics

We pull a lot of dead snowmobiellers and ice fishermen oout every year around here.
I would not drive onto 10cm of ice if I were you.

dude do NOT try to drive your car out on that - tons of idiots on snowmobiles die every year going out on ice that really isn't thick enough.

heh me and my best friend went through the ice walking across a pond when we were little, hanging onto the ice screaming for help - thankfully some guy driving by heard or saw us and got us out before we got too tired and sank.

It might be a good idea to put on your survival suit if you're thinking of taking your vehicle out on 10cm's of ice

As long as ice stays well below freezing, its thickness is directly related to the weight it can support, this table, provided by the National Research Council of Canada, shows. Ice loses its strength as it warms to 0ºC and cannot support as much weight, regardless of its thickness.
Safe Load Lake ice Sea ice
One person at rest 8 cm 13 cm
Snowmobile weighing 0.4 tonnes moving slowly 10 cm 18 cm
Pickup truck weighing two tonnes moving slowly 25 cm 40 cm
Tracked vehicle weighing 10 tonnes moving slowly 43 cm 66 cm
Cargo plane weighting 13 tonnes parks 61 cm 102 cm

They will skim the surface for a short distance if you don't let off the throttle. Now when most people are doing 100 across the lake and hit a patch of open water they tend to panic , let of the throttle and end up going for a swim.

As others have stated, do not drive your car on the ice untill you see others doing it, lol.
Second do not drive you car onto the ice without 4x4. You can get stuck VERY easy on the ice, I have pulled my share of stuck cars and 2wd trucks off ice over the last couple of years.

If you are on a sled and hit open water as long as you keep it full open you will be fine till you hit ice again.
When ever we cross a lake or something on the sleds we are full open, early in the season the middle 1/3 of the lake is still water. Feels weird the first time you throttle over water on a sled.

I have seen guys cross lakes in the summer on their sleds.

10cm is about how think the ice needs to be for us to go on with the ATV's, but we still go full open jsut because sometimes you hit parts that arent frozen as much and the ice breaks behind you. This is mostly on creeks and rivers though with the ATV's
