:stop Decent video editing software for dummies
I'm looking for a some decent software for basic video editing that doesn't
require me to read a 500 page book before I can use it.

Also need something for re-encoding to different formats

Do you want decent, or easy to use? You know better than this!

VirtualDub is very simple, and does an ok job for being free. It's still a pile of shit, though.

Try Sony Vegas, its easy to learn, in a few hrs you know the basic skills to make nice clips

i agree..sony vegas is a good program to start off with and is fairly inexpensive

Apple's iMovie is a fairly robust, easy to use, video program (and there are some cool inexpensive plug-ins if you want bells and whistles).

Caveat: You'll need a Mac (but iMovie comes installed free).

For more features there is Final Cut Express, and for industrial strength video editing, there is Final Cut Pro...well worth the invested time to learn it.

For encoding, AutoDesk Cleaner.
