psst... "fiance" = boy. "fiancee" = girl.

Semantic, maybe, but worth pointing out, imho.

And, yeah - weddings can get expensive. We're in the process of saving, too, and it looks like we're gonna have to take a loan to make it happen.

I guess someone _could_ live on $9 per hour... even in L.A.... but it wouldn't be pretty.

i dont see how it would work unless you are 15 living in your parents house. $5/hour at a 40 hour week is $10,400 a year

My mid/low end living costs in the US:

Rent: $600
Car: $300
Food: $250
Gas: $100
Insurance: $100
Other stuff: $150

Total $1500
(i know you can live on less, but im assuming this is the average)

that means you have to make $2142 BEFORE taxes (assuming the IRS takes 30% of your check)... which is $12.36 hour

math = ((2142*12)/52)/40=12.36

Your standard "vegas wedding" is like spending a total of $1500-$2k including flying both of you in and staying in a 3-4 star "average" hotel

A quick and easy drive-in type wedding is the point, if I want a destination type wedding it sure as hell wouldn't be vegas. It would be the bahamas or florida so the kids can hit disney world again.

First of all minimum wage is $5.85 an hour not $5 and it's goes up to $6.55 this July and up to $7.25 in July 2009. Secondly the IRS wouldn't take 30% of your taxes if you made that little. In fact even if you made $100K a year the IRS wouldn't take 30% of your money even if you include FICA taxes. People WAY overestimate how much the IRS can actually take from you. If I win $100 MILLION in the powerball lottery the most I'd pay is 35%

Say you made $10 an hour that's about $21,000 a year. Now say you're single and have no dependants other than yourself and no fancy deductions. In other words this is the WORST tax situation to be in. FICA taxes would be about $1600 a year. As for income taxes.

for 2007

Gross income $21,000
-$5350 for standard deduction
-$3400 for dependant( yourself )
taxble income $12,250

The first $7850 of taxble income is taxed at 10% for single people. The remaining $4400 is taxed at 15% for a total of ~$1400

So FICA tax $1600
Income tax $1400
TOTAL $3000

After tax income 18,000. Monthly average $1500

So you can clear $1500 a month by making about $10 an hour not $12.36

my last job 3 years ago (wow, cant believe its 2008 already) i made $72,000 a year and I had over 35% of my money taken out. however, i did get a lot back at the end of the year, but that is pretty much the norm. As well, my ex made $38,500 a year and it was about the same (2 selections on the w4 or whatever the IRS form was).

im basing those numbers from California because thats the only place ive really ever worked and made more than $6 an hour. when i was in college i made $5.85 working at the school library and i do remember hardly any taxes taken out but i thought that was because of it being a state funded school.

where the hell are you getting rent for 600? then turn around and spend 300 on a car?

but you are right it takes at least 1500 a month if you are single to live.

If you get money back then you don't get 35% taken out at the end of the day. And if you did get 35% taken out of your paycheck it's YOUR fault. If you file your w-4 form correctly you shouldn't get anymore taken out than you should be paying in. So when you file your taxes you wouldn't get a refund but you wouldn't have to pay either.

So no I'm not going to say someone making $12.36 an hour is going to get 35% taken out when he clearly won't if he knows how to file a w-4 correctly.

I have no clue, i just know nyc is more than most parts of LA. same goes for boston too. i know a lot of other areas u can get a decent place for $600 a month, but ur not near anything that great, such as central PA or the entire state of Iowa

Where I live now $600 a month would be very pricey. You get a nice house for that. Where I lived in Sarasota $600 would get you a studio apartment in the ghetto. it's all relative.

You'd be surprised.

I worked at walmart for $7/hr right out of high school, lol... rented a house with 5 friends and still somehow managed to have enough money to party every night. Looking back, it's pretty crazy. I make more in a day now than I did in a month back then, but at the time 7 bucks seemed like a pretty good deal.

no, your right. i had whatever the number is marked as a 2. if it was a 3 i would of gotten more money at the end of the day and less for the return.
