Recommend video software for me

I need an application that will do some simple editing for me.
ie.. taking clips and shortening them, compressing them.

Nothing too fancy. Suggestions please.

I find Premiere Pro as easy to use as a shareware app, but it may be overkill for what you want. There are always inexpensive ways to get an slightly older versions of Adobe Premiere, or Sony Vegas. And of course Windows Movie Maker is free! You should download all the trials and see which interface you like better, that's one of the major differences between them at the basic level.
