My Guitar Playing Friends

I need a little bit of input and opinions here. I give you the ESP EC-1000:

It is available on a deal site for $839
http://www.dealstudio.com/searchdeal...d=88564&ru=290

Here is some info and reviews:
http://www.thetabworld.com/ESP__LTD_...r_reviews.html

24-3/4" set neck
Mahogany neck
Rosewood fretboard (ebony on vintage black)
Abalone flags plus the model name at the 12th fret
24 extra jumbo frets
TonePros locking bridge

This is also available in a few other colours, including these that I'd think about:

That is a pretty cool guitar for the money. The EMG pickups sound great and will be problem free. I just don't buy guitars without playing them. I have found most music stores will match the MF prices if you press them a little.

every guitar is an individual

there are some things you just should buy in a store and in person after trying them out

How much money do you have to spend? And what kind of music are you playing? That is a decent mid level guitar... I gotta tell ya though, if you are willing to move up in the 2 grand + range you'll be even happier. Right now I own these guitars:

and...

and...

But the one that I'm playing these days is my Jeff Beck Custom Shop Fender Strat which you can sort of see in my hand here...

I would advise you to get the very best instrument that you can justify buying. You'll be happier in the long run. Though the ESP is a nice guitar. Again though, I'd be curious to know what kind of music your playing and what you rig is.

The years I played ( another old fuck),I had a mid 70's les paul left handed and the guy I bought it from took the finish off of the neck.It very different with a lite finish on it. I loved that guitar but the rent got due. I still kick myself for that one.

I would suggest musictoyz.com wildwestguitars.com instrumentpro.com and musicians friends vip site: http://www.privatereserveguitars.com/ Those are all high end online dealers who will make sure you have a quality instrument

the ESP is really nice but if you arent set on a les paul clone, look into the Schecter C1 Hellraiser for about the same amount of money, has the same features... plus a floyd rose.

I have one and I love it.

i would try to bump up your budget a bit a grab a Paul Reed Smith.

but if you go with one of those, i would go with the red

as for the big collections... sure they are nice... but up your budget for a really nice guitar, and you will only need 1

my dream guitar if i ever find myself with an extra 10K laying around

I own a Schecter... I used to have one of those ESPs but I sold it. Here is something you probably don't know... all of those guitars are made in the same factory... Schecter, ESP (LTD) and Ibanez.

For the money you should buy a PRS SE... it's your best bet... I own one and the fucker NEVER goes out of tune and sounds killer.

And what the hell...if you do decide to up the budget and would go as far as a PRS...why not just go ahead and get a Gibson Les Paul? That seems to be the body style you're going for so I'd keep the original in my choice of options too. And of course you can always go to a Guitar Center and try out some different guitar brands in person.

I've heard a lot of good things about those ESP Deluxe series guitars. Some of the other guitars suggested like Gibson and PRS are also very good guitars but it really all comes down to personal taste. I would really recommend trying to find a place in your area that sells those ESPs and go play them and compare them to other guitars there and see which one calls out to you. It's going to be different for every person and they all have there own feel and vibe to them.

There's so many guitars out there that I really like and would love to have so I finally decided to go and learn how to build them. Just graduated in February and it was the best decision I could have made. Here's a couple shots of them. Made one electric and one acoustic...

I'm waiting for zzounds or someone to have the new Ibanez SV5470 in stock. Runs about $1300 or so, but has the arsenal I'd like.

The ESP seems nice enough. Personal preference, but I dont care for so much inlay. Never tried EMG pickups, I'm more old-school vintage in the head, so maybe I'm missing out (current pups are mid 70's). But if the neck feels good to you, and they sound good, they sure are nice looking.. plus 24 frets in a les paul shape.

Robbie, what year is that gibson lp? Looks like a nice diverse collection you have there.

The Les Paul started life with me in 1978. back then it was
a brand new Gold Top Deluxe. But of course around 1980 I just had to rip out the soapbars and put some real humbuckers in it.
After playing it all over the country 7 nights a week I "retired" it in 1984 from active duty and moved to the yellow BC Rich Warlock (that's a "real" warlock not the cheap ones) It sure looked cool back then for the hair band days. Moved on to the Charvel Model 6 in '85 and stuck with that up until 1990 when I was touring in a band called Subway. That was when I embarked in my Ibanez years. Those fucking Ibanez's sure do play well and fast. And replacing the Ibanez/Dimarzio pups with Duncans was the best thing in the world.
About 4 years ago I got my first Jackson Soloist. I outfitted it with the new Floyd Speedloader trem. Bro, those things are fucking awesome. And then I stuck a Bareknuckles pickup in the bridge and that damn guitar plays and sounds like a dream. Then I went and got a Redmond Series Model K Floyd guitar a year later. Replaced those pups with a bareknuckles in the bridge and a couple of duncans in the mid and neck.
Then I went way overboard with the Beck Strat. Most expensive guitar of the lot. And definitely the one I'm most satisfied. Plays fast...but not TOO fast like the Ibanez...makes me work for it. And after changing pickups to some Duncan Beck rails..it has all the juice I need.
I'm playing through a Bogner Ecstasy into a 4x 12 Greenback loaded Bogner Cab and using a G-System for effects. So I'm damn happy with my sound too. Only problem is...I'm so damn busy making money that I just don't have time to play out as much as I'd like to.

Cool man, sounds good to me. Those goldtops are nice, it looks like it has a soapbar neck pickup with a standard ring in the pic.

I currently only have one old guitar that I'd left in the closet for a decade or more.. After my heart attack, I just had to clean it up and play again. Was kind of odd, but didnt question it. It's a '74 Ibanez Les Paul copy, a true "lawsuit" guitar so it's a little special. Was white when new, aged a nice cream color now. Original neck pickup and a period super distortion for the bridge. It's never been refretted so the frets are almost imaginary, makes it simple to play but tricky to bend with the frets so worn and low. Has some crap tuning pegs on it, but considering I snapped it up for $100 I had in my pocket from a singer about to pawn it in the mid 80's.. damn good deal hehe.

One of my brothers has a floyd rose speedloader. He and a bunch of others picked them up from MF when they were on clearance. He tells me once it was initially setup and he resolved a slightly loose trem arm with a bit of tape, he can't knock it out of tune when he tries.

I remember when those warlocks came out, I wanted one but went for an ibanez roadstar instead. Wish I still had all my old guitars. My favorite was a mid 69's Epiphone. Just played unreal and had so many sweet spots. Was neck heavy, but no biggy. Here's one that looks identical: http://www.gbase.com/Stores/Gear/Gea...x?Item=1554191
If you see one of those in a pawnshop, get it. For me! hehe

Thanks man, glad you like it. Looks like we have similar taste too. It's an LP shape with pretty subtle inlays and 24 frets. The only thing is I did the PRS 25" scale and a string through because I like that look better. That's what's nice about knowing how to build, you can do whatever you want. Now I just have to slowly get a shop set up and I'll be doing a lot more...

Yeah no doubt about it. You also set it up with all the possible coil combinations it looks like, which I would also like (thats why I want that new Ibanez).

Did you do it the buzz feiten method? I always have tuning issues here or there, even if individual intonation seems good. It's never perfect.

1972 Fender Telecaster custom ( reissue )
1979 Guild JFN-55

For my electric side - I have been a strat man for years. Loved them dearly until I got in the Les Paul and 335 in the last 2 years, Gibsons sound positively wicked thru the marshall.

Acoustics - Nothing like a dobro for the blues

I play every one of these as often as I can. I have a few more on my target list:
- Gibson Les Paul Goldtop
- Gibson Flying V
- Fender Precision bass
- Fender Jazz bass
- Martin D-45
- Guild 12 string

aubreythree - do you live anywhere near a music store? it's been said here already, but how a guitar feels to you is very important. unlike the others here, i admit to owning some less expensive guitars and basses - a schecter and a couple carvins - but even my carry-around-town yamaha bass was something that felt very good in my hands before i bought it. and keep in mind that not only will a comfy axe help you play better and faster, but it might also keep you from getting carpel tunnel or some kind of repetitive motion disorder!

Guitars are very personal....you need to pick the one that suits your tastes the best, not the opinions of others.

I agree. I would play it before buying. Hope you can sell it soon.

It is available on a deal site for $839

Here is some info and reviews:
http://www.thetabworld.com/ESP__LTD_...r_reviews.html

24-3/4" set neck
Mahogany neck
Rosewood fretboard (ebony on vintage black)
Abalone flags plus the model name at the 12th fret
24 extra jumbo frets
TonePros locking bridge

This is also available in a few other colours, including these that I'd think about:

Go the whole nine yards, spend some extra money and get a Gibson Les Paul!!! These guitars are, as another post said, mid level, guitars!!! If you happen to play in a working band you will make your money back and have a top of the line instrument.
