it has definitely peaked my curiosity when I received an invitation in the mail to attend a local presentation on the technology behind it.Microsoft loves to stay ahead of the curve and i am definitely interested in their streaming silverlight servers

It isn't fully developed yet.

They are paying people to start using it to create a buzz.

Lame if you ask me.

compared to flash it's still kind of buggy - but one big advantage is, that you can also take your old wmv videos and play them seamlessly integrated in your website without the endless buffering of windows media player. but it requires windows media server 2008 and it will take a while till hosts migrate to that version. and to be able to use all functions of silverlight you have to encode your videos in VC-1

Great, now they're rolling out ANOTHER thingie that'll be exploited like crazy, mostly by shitheads pushing malware etc.

I predict illegal tubes seeing the opportunity to steal loads of joins ahead...
Well, it's not an impossibility... so let's just hope they keep it patched and secure.

Silverlight's WMV streaming is very, very good.
Aside from that, it's some fucked up shit that it can't even access cross domain files still

Been experimenting for awhile. See where it goes. Huge opportunities with it, see how many pan out.

Maybe I'm missing something, but does Silverlight work on Firefox?
Flash works on all platforms and is supported by all modern browsers.

We have been working with SL for about 8 months. If you want to see some demos we have done for Adult clients, go to

http://sl.objectcube.com and send me some feed back at [email protected] .

The above is for version 1 of SL, when version 2.0 comes out in Aug with every thing Microsoft has promised then it will be the killer technology that will take on Flash.

I looked into it when it first came out. I really like what Microsoft did with XAML and WPF. Too bad they are proprietary technologies.

As such, I predict only large corporate companies will use it for their internal projects or for very select customers. I don't think anyone is using it for the public mass internet population.

The open sourcing of the flex SDK was a smart move on Adobe's part. It's hard to compete against that.

As a developer though, it's nice to be able to use whatever language you want. I guess technically you can do that with Actionscript 3 since the virtual machine specs are freely available. I personally would love to develop web apps client side with Ruby but I don't think there are any viable options for that right now.

Silverlight is the .NET environment stripped down to a minimum that runs in the browser. It is available for IE, Firefox, and Safari on PC and OS X.
