hmm .. I am on our 4th kid .. 2nd was a bit colic .. truth is .. and i don't care what the "new parents" have to say about this ... i used gripe-water... but not he shitty no alcohol stuff .. the real stuff with booze in it .. and it seemed to work a bit . wasn't the be-all and end-all .. but gave me and my daughter a few hours sleep here and there .. just follow directions .. and be patient .. a frustrated parent is not a good parent .. and you tend to lose perspective... step out side the box if you have to ....

Hang in there Mike and make sure each of you has equal time-off from the screaming when necessary. My ex is going through this with his new baby and it is getting much better after 4 months of it. The worst side effect of it is the arguing that the parents do out of frustration and lack of sleep. This too shall pass

People are idiots.

Try some different formulas. We had to go through a few different ones. Allementum I believe is the one we used.

Gripewater does work great but I thought they stopped making it in the last little while?

Gripe water will work for limited amounts of time... or some warm distilled water with a drop or two of peppermint extract can also help ease the colic. If the baby is breastfeeding, please make sure you check the diet of mom. NO CAFFIENE, no major amounts of veggies like cabbage, broccoli etc, they cause the milk to make the baby gassy. VERY TONED DOWN DIET FOR MOM, like cottage cheese, yogurt, bread, baked potatoes, rice, that kind of thing. Try to avoid a ton of red meat in her diet as well, and foods that are spicy or high in acid content (which can actually sour the milk if you consume enough).

Hi Mike,

I know exactly how you feel, my son had colic and I spent many a night walking up and down a room with him trying to comfort him, the gripe water worked, hope it does for you, good luck.

Warren.

No, they stopped making gripe water with alcohol.. it used to have a small amount. Woodwards still makes all natural gripe water that works like a charm ;) Even the adults around here use it and our younglings, and none of them are babies anymore.. it just works.

Oh something else you can do to help baby.. lay them on the bed between your legs and just rub their tummy..and take their legs and gently push them back into their abdomen a bit..then put baby on their tummy (keeping an eye that they can breathe etc) and rub their back... Colic is a sign of their nervous system reacting to unfamiliar discomfort (like gas), it has to LEARN to deal with pain, and doing the things I mentioned above will help comfort baby and get the WORKS going.. (expect lots of good farting).

I should mention, if baby is formula fed, WATCH WHAT FORMULA YOU USE! Enflac and the like are VERY hard on baby's tummy.. Nestle Good Start is the BEST by far (all my kids had VERY Sensitive tummies) and it is much more pre-broken down than other formulas and easier for baby to digest (which in turn helps the colic situation). It's about the closest to mother's milk you can get from a tin.

Something else I would also suggest is regular baths with a little bit of aromatherapy..johnson and johnson have a lovely baby aromatherapy bath that really does help soothe baby's overactive nervous system.
