Had younger brothers that I basically raised since my parent was a single father. Honestly its just a suck it up and deal with it issue. It sucks and I feel for you. Its just sort of intestinal issues and whatever you do, do not use baking soda as it can make shit worse by changing their PH. However it can work under other situations, I just feel to not risk it. Some others may say some chamomile and or peppermint tea, again iffy but does help digestion.

We have a 16 month old with gas problems and he still hasn't slept a night. Used to cry all day, all night and half the night turning and twisting until he was 15m. He's been on a hyperallergic diet but haven't helped. The past weeks we've given him herbs to kill the gas and the days are so much better.
So, if she is 5 weeks old you have really nothing to worry about. Colic is just a small stage until roughly 12 weeks and only for a few hours each day. Just make sure you see a real doc with knowledge if it keeps going. |

All three kids...welcome to parenthood.
One trick that would work is taking a ride in car. Make sure to change the baby into fresh clothes and diapers. Wrap the baby up like a burrito, strap her in and take a joyride around the neighbor.

Thanks everyone - I know it's primarily a "suck it up" thing but hints like the car rides help...we're already using a rumble chair, she loves it when she's not colicky but it doesn't help in the bad periods...we also have heard that bundling or swaddling can help with many babies, but she hates being swaddled, unfortunately --- she'd much rather be naked, which I'm not overly comfortable with, given the business I'm in
![]() But thanks for the support and hints...any other would be welcome ![]() |

fingers crossed, my baby just turned 2 months old and only cries when he needs something.. Can recognize all his cries, and they get solved fast.. He has a new cry where he gets CRAZY loud if you take his bottle away halfway through sometimes..

Peppermint or Camomile Tea is good usualy, depends on how bad it is though. If you do not mind medicine, there is something called Sab Simplex which destroys the gas bubbles so the gas can escape. Helped with my now 12 week old...
We also gave her caraway suppositories now and then to help clear her bowels. Does your wife breast-feed? If so, it might be that your girl simply reacts badly to something in the breast milk. We switched to Formula and all problems went away over night. ("Pre" Formula is what we give her, do not switch to those designated as "3 months+" since they usually have loads of sugar added)

I raised 3 babies and as one poster hinted in many cases it really is the parents karma the kids react too. My wife and I both live intensely and go through the same emotions as everyone else, but at the end of the day are happy, at peace, almost never argue, and completely unworried about anything.
I think kids pick right up on that, all 3 slept like stones almost from birth. ![]() |

is your wife breast feeding? sometimes the milk dries up a little as the day goes on and they get hungry later in the day. also make sure the baby is suckling long enough to be getting enough of the hind milk.
we've just gone through what you're experiencing so i pity you, but it does get better. our colic turned out to be hunger, and sumplementary bottles of formula milk helped a lot. |

I have done this twice and it works. Take the child to a chiropractor. I know it sounds nuts but the wife read about it somewhere and it worked twice for us. Worth the $60 or whatever it was.

You may have what is known as a Trained Night Crier. Babies who are put down to bed, after being rocked or held till asleep, never learn how to put themselves back to dream land, without parental assistance.
You might find this link helpful http://www.med.umich.edu/1libr/pa/pa_nightcr_hhg.htm I too thought my kid was colicy but the Doc gave me some simple adjustments to bed time routine and after Three days of hell, we had a baby that slept from 8 PM to 7 AM with 2 naps a day. Sigh .. my "baby" is 22. God Bless your new one! |

Thanks everyone - we'll take a look at all the suggestions and links, and try a lot of them, I'm sure.
For those who asked, no, she's not being breast-fed so it's not the foods that mom is eating or lack of milk --- she's been on mylicon almost since birth and we already switched her to the gentlease formula, because she was gassy and fussy and times throughout the first four weeks. Again, thanks for all the ideas and support, it's a big help just knowing how many people went through this, and I'll report back on what (if anything) works. ![]() |

Testing out formulas is going to be your best bet. Try whatever you haven't tried yet ;)
Also make sure it IS colic. Friend's baby had what they suspected was colic but ended up being something more serious and was put on Tagamet. And if you think THIS is fun, just wait for teething ![]() |

Mike, here's a hint about teething - many babies run a high fever (my son's would hit 101-102) JUST BECAUSE OF THE TEETHING. His pediatrician was my pediatrician when I was growing up and had seen thousands of kids over the years. He said every book said babies didn't run fevers with teething so doctors would write out a prescription for Amoxicillin each time and now as they get older it's harder for the drugs to have any effect because they've built up a tolerance. But our Dr. said it happened with all 3 of his kids and he'd seen it 100s of times.
So.....if your baby gets a fever and Tylenol brings it down immediately, they feel better w/o the fever and a tooth pops up, don't believe what the "books" say ![]() |

Yep before that my mom was basically up most of my brothers first 5 months. Any pics back then she had rings so dark under her eyes she looks like a racoon. Then when to another doc he said goats milk and it was a miracle.

I understand what you are dealing with!! I Make my call times noon, because of the sleep i dont get!! its a 24/7 job! A month ago, my daughter spit up at 3am, no noise, nothing! I and my girl sleep with one eye open. You will have to do the same. Its been better the last 2 weeks, but now i just want to play with her before work. My Girl says she is old enough to go into the crib in the other room, I say no way!! mabe at 4 months, but not now. I keep remembering what could have happened if i did not catch my daughter choking in silence. I generally dont share my close personal life with people, but if my posts helps you find the streangth to stay up late night and be there for your daughter, its worth the time i spent writing this an sharing my personal experience.. Be strong! It will get better. ![]()

I can't make any recommendation as to what might work, because nothing I tried worked with my son, but I do wish you the best of luck.
The munchkin used to scream 8-9 hours straight, and that is a literal-no-exaggeration statement. I really thought I was going to end up committed somewhere. But he's 12 now, so we survived it. Still has a funny tummy though. ;)

As suggested by others we tried various formulas to try to relieve our son. I'm not sure if it was the formula or just coincidence, but as son as we switched over to the Costco brand formula all of his symptoms were 100% better.
Good luck to you. I remember how stressful it can be. It will pass though. ![]() |

But administer it s-l-o-w-l-y or you'll see it come right back up immediately.

The OTC stuff Wizzo suggested helped as well as a clip-on sound activated vibrator for your baby's crib http://www.toysrus.com/product/index...ductId=2476633
My little one preferred sleeping in her stroller that converted into a bassinette instead of the regular bassinette. We'd put her into one of those infant sleeping bags that's padded, then stick her in the stroller with the vibrating thingee on it after giving her a few drops of the gas elimanator stuff. She started sleeping better and longer, giving us a chance to get a few winks in as well.

Our oldest had it. Started at about 4 weeks. He just went nuts at about 4pm and would not settle down till 9 or 10. We tried everything. Love patience and a sense of humor worked the best. Passed after about 12 weeks. Good luck.
