I agree 100%. My point was a true friend will not sit around with your other friends and gossip about your stupid actions, like so many have a tendency to do. They will become part of the solution and not part of the problem.

I can understand how my point could be misconstrued..it was not my intent...I should have been more clear.

It was an extreme example I know and probably influenced by the fact that most of the truly stupid things my friends have done were criminal.

The point I was getting at is that if we are really true friends, I can tell you when you have done something stupid and you won't expect me to back you anyway.

Ive known hundreds of people... i go out in town and i "know" half the town...
BUT, i dont have any real friends. I have some close ones but they are not 100%...

Example: last couple of years i spend a lot of time with a group of 4 guys, ... i was the "new" guy in the group and those 3 were like THE best friends, their view anyway... but when the others were not around they all have something bad to say about the others, How they hate that, and blabla he is so fucking annoying. He got so fuckin ugly teeth, etc...
and you know talk shit and laughing at the others flaws n shit., telling the others secrets and stuff... When i stopped drinking i stopped hanging out with those guys... and they are still "best friends" with each other... strange you may think... BUT IVE SEEN THIS IN EVERY GROUP OF FRIENDS I EVER ENGAGED.... and ive had so many interests so i always had "friends" in different type of groups... and ive seen so much shit between FRIENDS... that i dont think the type of BEST FRIEND some people in this thread are describing exists...

YOU MAY SAY YOU HAVE A BEST FRIEND, BUT THINK ABOUT IT, BE HONEST TO YOURSELF, IS THAT PERSON REALLY A BEST FRIEND?... many people live with denial with this... cause they really dont wanna see the BEST FRIEND that they had for 10-20 years for what he/she really is... they just feel glad they have a best friend and neglect every bad shit about them. BUT HEY... thats human.

And almost EVERYONE talk shit... i honestly only known 1 guy, that NEVER said a bad word of anyone of his friends. If other people talk shit about someone he doesnt say anything, and he is the only one i could share a secret with and really trust him not telling anyone.

Exactly, they defend YOU they support YOU. If my friend did something stupid, which I have had friends who have, I would stand up for them in front of people, saying to other people trashing them in front of me, you don't know the whole story or people make mistakes or why are you judging them off of one thing, or whatever the problem is it's hard to give an example without a definite problem. The point being they are on your side, and will not jump in with others so they can try to be accepted. Of course when I have my friend alone I will tell them to their face how stupid they acted or whatever so they can get better or grow or have a better life and I would expect the same in return.

I won't mention names, but they felt the same way I did and we discussed how many people just don't get that and most of the time people will say, "I was just teasing or joking," as a way of justifying their rude comments. It's not about really defending their actions it's about not trashing them to others and defending them as a person. Most people want their friends to lie, agree with them when they are wrong, and tell them they are always right. I consider myself very fortunate and have some very good old friends and some good new friends. They are the ones who are there when things are going well and when they suck. We will do each other favors w/o being asked and w/o expecting anything in advance. "What do you need?" is asked long before "I need this." is even mentioned.

And they'll tell you your ass looks big in those pants and help you find a pair that make it look smaller ;)

I also agree with what Loryn said about those who are willing to not "go with the crowd" and bad mouth you when others are.

I feel very blessed with my friends - some I've had since I was in grade school and some just within the last few years.

I disagree. That's called "loyalty" ... it may be a positive trait of a real friend, but not what defines a real friend. A REAL friend WILL call you out on your actions regardless of the consequences. A real friend is someone who wants to see your growth over their self serving interests.

Someone who is NOT a real friend is usually just hanging around to see what value they can extract from you or the relationship. A sure fire way to spot them is the way they try to make nice of every situation as to not upset or jeopardize the relationship.

Many years ago one of my female friends who had moved "back home" to Montana suddenly announced she was getting married. When I finally had the chance to meet him I was stunned - He was overweight, not attractive, had no job, and no future. He was nothing more than a funny drunk; He got off the plane and was hammered. I was the only one who spoke up and said anything. My wife and I were asked to be in the wedding party; My wife was a bridesmaid and I declined.

Six months later she suddenly showed up on my doorstep without warning, saying she needed help. She needed to put her life back together while she filed for divorce.

A true friend will tell you the truth instead of sugarcoating things.

BTW.... The chick I'm taking about ended up getting married to a great guy, and I am her son's Godfather.

For me it's pretty easy to know who are my real friends.

They are a few, select individuals.

They are the ones I can talk the real things with, and I can also bullshit with.

They are the one that are there for me... and don't talk in my back when I fuck up.

I can count on them when I am not there and need something done...

They never ask to borrow money for me.

They are the ones that will call you, just to chill... not just call you when they need something.

Anyways, I only have 2-3 REAL buddies and they are pretty easy to know... you just know it, it clicks, you trust them and there's no bullshit...

Now friends that like to party and shit.. I might have 50-100 of those... but it's not the same thing.
